self portrait

For this week I choose to take photos of me and more of things I do or things I have around. Just like things laying on my living room that I have neglected to clean up and movies and books that I’ve never open but some how are there. This was mostly about my personality and what type of things I do/ like.

Photo studio – MOMA

Studio photography has always been something that fascinates me in more than one way. Techniques unique to everyone change and the results are unique for all photographers. The gallery at MOMA completely change the way I perceived how studio photography work. While many photographers have a different view of what the subject is we can see many different variations on style making it unique to them.
Some of the work that impact me the most was by Valerie Belin where she took photography to a new level. Making an object look alive with the help of a few brushes and light. The texture in her piece mannequin is the result of make up and uncles able light that outlines the subject. The dark background with pale skin texture makes me wonder what kind of light did she use and if any type of filter was used to create shadows that reflect a more human like figure.
Something that stood out to me was the way a photographer improves on their own work. In Martin Chambi work there was many things that showed his improvement. One of his portraits from his early work seem different from his work more into his life. A picture taken in 1978 of a men who seem to be an older men wearing military clothes was one of the most stocking to me. The sharp image with a shallow depth of field gave the illusion that the person was in fact standing I front of me. With the time line being old I can see that as his work progress he got better at what his idea was to improve the picture.

This galleries made me think of interesting and different ways on making photographs. Creating an unique vision to the same object others can see can make someone stand out from the rest.

Spring

For this week I venture myself on the cold of what is New York City. I decided to go to prospect park and get a few shot of the little green things that are starting to come out of the ground. Sadly theres not much at this time of the years but I did manage to get a few shots. When the climate changes so much not a lot of green is seen. I associate green to spring. Green is mostly the color of nature and it gives the feeling of something being alive.

Midterm part 2

For the second part of the midterm I choose a half black background. This decision came after I saw the first part of the midterm was full with light with a bright background and to show a different feeling. With the subject being black and similar to the background i found out it wasn’t focusing all the time so I had to be careful with that.

Midterm part 1

For the first part of this total transformation I chose a bright background to light an alarm clock. I like that the surface of the clock itself has a variety of light that can be manipulated to create a feeling. For this first part I choose a more happier than sad mood and to create this making a bright background with some shadows on the sides gave a more happy environment. As the light got closer to the subject the shadows started to fade and created a calm back drop. for this picture i also use a second light with the help of my phone to create an accent light.  DSC_0469

Buy me!

For this shoot I found a few challenges a few were to try to get all the details on the product that I was trying to photograph. For the light I try to use two lights for this assignment. The two lights that use I try to get the back drop with a gradient and a spot light to separate the object and give it a more mysterious look.

Childhood

For this week’s assignment I use a Russian doll where I set up the light to create a sad feeling. I set the doll in different ways to create first a few family style photographs that reflect a portrait of an old style family and then something to reflect a tragedy with parts of the doll everywhere.

Rose

DSC_0256 For this weeks assignment we use light to create mood on a rose. The light and shadows can be all thats necessary to create a feeling. in this case this rose has a sad mood with the shadows and light in the background. The dark petals and just a portion of color can give a depressing and sad feeling.

Shoe

For this shoot I use my DIY studio I use a soccer shoe and directed the light in as many different ways as I could. This shoot was a little hard due to the light being a little bigger than the shoe it seem as some of the shots come out similar even if the light was in different sports. I corrected the white balance on photoshop as my camera wasn’t cooperating with the light. The detail on the front of the shoe was the most interesting part of the composition.

DIY Studio

imageThis is my DIY photography studio and is still in the prosses of getting better and improving as I experiment with the light and find a better placement. To start I had no idea how to accomplish this and try to get a few ideas from whatever I had available at home. First I found a light that’s been in my closet for a few months that I’ve never use before it was exactly what I needed according to the few blogs and videos I watched. It also came with a clamp that was really helpful to keep it in place. Next I needed some type of stand and I didn’t seem to find any and opt to use a chair as a temporary placement. I also needed some type of backdrop and I notice that I had a few rolls of left over Christmas wrapping paper. My idea is to use the blank side as a back drop and revers it to the color side as a color backdrop. This paper can also be use as a diffuser as is thin and can be warily place around the light. In this picture there’s also a black cardboard that can be place anywhere to use as contrast or just to experiment with a few color. A few of the challenges I think I will encounter are the fact that I don’t seem to find any other stands for the light and also the type of light that I can use as there are different lightbulb to choose from and plan on getting a few different ones to experiment with the light. One thing that I forgot to include was a small tripod that can be place in front of the chair and easily move around with no need to adjust the other elements also a morrow to use a reflection to be combine with the light and create different types of light on the subject . I have a few more ideas to increase the quality and variety of photos that can be taken in this small studio that need more materials such as getting more lights.
