Homework 1

Since going green is very important to the earth I want that to be the main focus for this ad campaign. I also want this campaign to show that electric cars are not inferior to gas powered cars. Since this is the feel i’m going for I would choose Tim Wallace as my photographer. The way Tim Wallace uses motion blur to capture a sense of power that the car is using is great. This use of motion blur can give a sense of power to the Honda FCX Clarity that most electric cars do not get. The way Tim uses motion blur makes you feel as if the picture itself is in motion. That effect alone can draw in even the most distracted person walking by the ad. Tim also uses shallow depth of field to focus in on the car. This is also a great way to catch peoples attention and to focus in on the car and not the fact that it is just another electric car. Tim’s use of oblique angles in some of his pictures to is very nice. The mixture of an oblique angle with motion blur can give some pictures even more of a feeling that it is moving and alive in the frame. Last but not least add in the way Tim uses asymmetry in his photos is great. The picture he has of the red Ford GT speeding down the green highway is a great example of how off-balance can work, and the car does not need to be in the center of the ad. All in all i feel that Tim Wallace can bring a feeling of power and motion to the brand, and showcase the true power of an electric car.

Both Wallace and Clemens use motion blur. Interesting that you chose Wallace. Certainly the off-balance composition can make the image feel dynamic.

Be careful to distinguish between motion blur and shallow depth of field. Wallace almost always uses extensive depth of field preferring to keep things sharp except to create the feeling of motion.
