The detournament image of Aylan Kurdi, the drowned Syrian boy whose photo has echoed around the world atop the pedestal of lady liberty. Aylan was among refugees on a boat to Greece when the boat capsized killing 12 passengers. Aylan’s corpse was found drifted ashore on a Turkish beach. Liberty island is home to the statue of liberty, the very symbol of freedom of oppression. However, many Americans have strongly voiced against taken Syrian refugees into our country, and 31 states have outright refused acceptance of these refugees. Aylan Kurdi’s corpse takes lady liberty’s place atop the pedestal on liberty island not as a symbol of freedom and acceptance, but as a representation of how far the American people have strayed from what our nation is suppose to stand for.
