  1. This article was very interesting and at the same time disturbing to read. The system failed Mr. Murdough on several different levels. First homelessness and mental health disorders among veterans, has become common terminology among this population. r/o PTSD and chronic depression is usually what leads to alcohol abuse, and unfortunately incarceration follows. It appears that we have yet to psychologically connect with the majority of this population, in order to prevent them from being incarcerated. Tertiary care should begin during or after Mr. Murdough would have been released from jail, however; it could not have happened because the prison institutions needs to be rehabilitated as a whole. The issue with the temperature, the guard not checking on the inmates, the unfair treatment of the inmates all appears to be a part of social psychology and “evil” behavior. Could it actually be that the way one views themselves has impacted the way others has been treated. (e.g. the guards feeling superior over the inmates) Advocating for the civil rights of those whom cannot do it for themselves is what being a human service worker is about, and that is clearly needed here.

  2. This article was extremely disturbing and heartbreaking. Many individuals at Rikers Island are being put behind bars without the government realizing that most individuals have a mental illness that needs to be treated. Many of the crimes committed by the individuals at Riker’s Island may have been committed because of the mental illness these individuals have. I believe there is violence at Riker’s Island because of mental illness and other things. This individual could have not died because the cell being overly heated may have been avoided. The guards should check on the cells at least once every two hours to make sure everything is going good.
