Value Studies

I know my value studies aren’t the best, but I think I used the multiply layer a bit too much. I took off the small party hat and the muzzle the bear had. I decided to show a headlight to showcase the bear like how it would in an actual circus. I think the light makes the illustration have more of an emotional aspect.

  1. Lylianna I agree- the use of value and lighting are really helping to communicate the idea. You COULD use some motif of a big top …. like the striped tent fabric or crowd silhouette to firm up the concept? But might not be needed. I’d like to see you work on the drawing to really get the figure and expression, also skirts are ELLIPSES, they wrap around the form. This is a simple image so really hone in on the details.

    Nice work.

Regarding value… first question… what color is the bear? WHITE? No? well… right now she is in all versions. Remember colors are value.

I like the softness of the 3rd one, but the shadows, highlight and bear color are off. If I were you, I would use a toy or make a rough model from play dough and light it from above so you can figure out the light and shadows.
