Audre Lorde does give many valid points addressing racism, ageism, sexism etc. But in this time and age i believe that her points are invalid. Woman today are respected more now then back then, they are seen as equals and the points such as racism and ageism are to much of general/bland topics to bring up. I think Audre since she was a lesbian woman and black back then she had more problems then usual, not saying she is not a powerful woman for fighting in what she believes is right, i just believe that she was a little more agitated because she was lesbian and not accepted more then all of her other rants which lead onto the purpose of her essay

Yes and no. Audre wrote about big issues that she faced in her time, even though things have changed a whole lot, since laws have now been placed against racism and discrimination of any kind, it still exists. It may not occur to many people but there are those who, to this day face some type of discrimination.
I agree, Wendy. Discrimination still exists today, even though many people think we are “past” these problems.
Also, Joshua is right that Audre Lorde had more to be upset about because she occupied multiple non-dominant categories, making her oppression more complex. In other words, she had a reason to be “agitated!” 🙂
I think that women are seen more as equals today then back when this article was written, and I think we have come a lot further, especially in the aspect of ageism and the conflict mentioned between older and younger individuals. Even concernicng racism, yes we do have a ways to go, but we have come pretty far(the President of the United States for example). However, with all that being said, she does have a point with society needing to become more understanding and compassionate towards “outsiders”. Women are still being paid less than men and gay marriage is still pretty controversial, so we still have some changes to be made. I also agree that her personal identities and the tone of her article makes her seem hostile, agitated and very bias.
I agree that women are more respected, but they are not seen as equals because men are still the dominant in today’s society. The social roles of men and women is still a big difference because of gender differences. Women being treated differently or unfairly in the workplace because of sex discrimination and treat a particular sex unfavorably because gender. For example, I wouldn’t hire a woman because she will need time off when she gets pregnant and I can’t fire her. Which also lead to men get paid more than women.
i see feel that a lot of the point she talks about are still problems todays. Not as much with black women but with everyone in general. you can aply alot of what she says to some or most minorities daily struggles. many laws ave been put in place put peoples generalization of others has not unfortunately.
This is a great thread! Nice ideas, all of you!
