Amira S. Pass

What I noticed first was the contrasting meek ‘sorry’ and direct eye contact she gave when bumping me as we crossed the street. I guess she was not a big talker but definitely not shy since she did everything short of physical contact to make sure I knew she was talking to me. She boldly wore a berry colored coat and plaisey scarf in the standard black, brown, grey, and olive green sea that winter brings. Like the typical tech obsessed young person, her iPhone was clenched tightly in her hand and in the quick moment of contact, I heard an audience laughter instead of music. That brought a smile to her face lending her the impression of a happy and light personality. Her pace quickened once we reach the sidewalk, making me wonder which she was rushing to get to; school or one of the local trains for work. The last thing I saw before we parted ways was her battered red and black checkered book bag. The dirty bottom and tear on one of the arms alluded to her lifestyle. It had to be on-the-go with little complications from whatever could fit into that bag. One could forever ponder how many adventures they’ve gone on together.

He is wearing a pair of Beats By Dre around his ears playing Travis Scott’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. He’s laid back against the chair as if he’s falling asleep, maybe he was up last night finishing homework. He keeps removing his black rimmed glasses and perching them on his head as if he dislikes them and finds them uncomfortable. He has a short trimmed haircut that shows off his appearance. The NYG logo on his hoodie shows he’s supportive of his team or maybe he’s an athlete that likes football hoodies. His skin is tan and the eyes are a little bit chinky, he looks Hawaiian. It seems like he doesn’t talk a lot because he keeps to himself. His face is serious but isn’t bothered by anything. His eyebrows are furrowed and forehead is creased as in deep in thought. He’s tall unless it’s his timbs giving him height. He’s independent and observant about his surroundings.

Michelle Wu

She is Asian who has medium long hair and is black. She is wearing a black North Face jacket that has brown feathers on her hood. Her pant is light blue skinny jean and her shoe is a high top sneaker that looks weared out. The color is purple and grey. She has a Longchamp bag that is a large size and the color is blue. She listens to music on her her phone which is a Samsung S6.  she uses a turquoise color earphone and her music is a little bit loud.  She some times doze off in the train and constantly looking at the list of the stops and the ads.

His incorrect posture tells me that he probably spends a lot of time in a chair hunched over a computer. I assume he is either a very intelligent and hard working person, or he likes to procrastinate. He is aware of this because he tries to sit up every so often as a result. I can tell he cares about his impressions on other people because he wants to look decent and respectable. He doesn’t wear bright sneakers, and the only thing I ever see him wear on his feet are brown combat boots (or any kind of brown boots for that matter), and  the occasional dark navy pair of Vans . This tells me he is a minimalist when it comes his wardrobe and he focuses more on having versatile pieces, rather than having many pieces. This is further upheld by the fact that he dresses in neutral toned clothing. The most flashy thing he ever wears is that huge, puffy, red H&M jacket. Because this clashes with the rest of his wardrobe, he probably received that jacket as a gift because there is no way he’d buy something like that.

This girl had an iPhone 6 and wearing an Apple headphones. I wonder what she is listening to. Probably like everybody else is listening to. She is also wearing a yellow hoodie, might be her favorite color to wear for winter. Today is not even that cold, but she is wearing a red scarf, fuzzy black boot, and a long black coat. I wonder why she want to put on a hood inside of the station. The subway train have the heater on and she does not need to put on the hood on. I know some people like to put on their hood on because they want to keep hidden, but maybe she just shy and does not want people see her face. I noticed when I see her face, she kind of look sad or tired. Must be tired from waking up early for school according to her heavy looking backpack. She might be an introvert by the way she is wearing and her body look sluggish, but she is a very mysterious girl.

Sitting across from me on the subway, wearing a focused look on his face he seemed ready to take on the day. Tuning out the world with his Beats headphones, I could hear every drum kick and snare of the song he’s listening to. His head adorned with dreadlocks gives the impression that he is a person of nature. Wearing dreadlocks in today’s society is also a very bold move because of prejudices that people share within their private circles. What makes this an even bolder move, is the fact that he is also a person of color, which in itself comes with negative prejudices on sight. Sporting Super-Dry clothing and ‘flexing’ Nike sneakers, it is fair to say that he has a different sense in style and his execution/presentation all contributes to why he stands out. His style could be targeted to a certain crowd but base on the reaction of the other passengers, it’s clear that his style appealed to everyone that day. However, what would’ve been more appealing to me is if he wore a dash of orange throughout his outfit.

She looks to be someone who dresses for comfort rather than fashion.  she is wearing a thick winter jacket and high boots, to perhaps provide extra protection from the cold winter weather outside. From the way her hair is styled, it’s easy to see that cares about her appearance enough to look respectable. She wears light makeup, which tells me that she is not self-conscious about her looks, but still wears makeup to enhance it.  The purse she carries doesn’t suggest that she is in college, but by the biology textbook that she is reading with intense focus, leads me to believe that she is.  Every now and then she looks up from her book to scope out her surroundings with tells me that she likes to be aware of what is happening but doesn’t necessary want to interact with her surroundings. By the way, she is reading the textbook. It’s easy to see that she is very interested in biology. Maybe she’s studying it because she wants to do be something in relation to the subject. Perhaps a doctor, or nurse, or, even a biology teacher.  And even though she seem reserved person, but the way she greets the people who come around her, you can tell she is friendly and helpful.

Eww she has an iphone 4s hasn’t she heard of the word upgrade or maybe she doesnt have a job to afford a new one her peers around her all have expensive phones I wonder why she doesn’t, she also has a funny accent I would say she is caribbean maybe Dominican or guyanese because she has that pretty Indian/ black kind of hair oh wait the gold bangles on her wrist and gold rings on her fingers screams Indian I do love her skin so smooth and she is pimple free I see why she doesn’t have alot of makeup on. I should go over there and give her some dressing advice cause those black sneakers not working they not even Jordan or Nike I’ll give her points cause I love her blue Calvin Klein sweater and jeans. I somehow wish I was this girl who is so confident and brave she doesn’t look like she cares about what people say or think about her.

Youming Guan

He is wearing a thick green Abercrombie coat as if he is terrified of the cold, but his empty Dunkin Donut’s iced coffee cup says otherwise. With earbuds plugged in, he looks like someone without a care in the world. His hair is very messy as if he does not care about his outer appearance, but by the outfit he has chosen, it seems that he has spent quite some money into his appearance. I assume he either has a job or his parents care about the way their son looks in public. He looks like a student going to his early morning classes in college. I assume he must stay up late at night on the computer or studying by the bags under his eyes and the fact that he is asleep on the train. When awoken, he seems to have a stern look on his face, as if he is in deep thought. His bag looks fairly old and used. By the size of it, the bag looks like it takes a toll on his back. He seems to be someone who enjoys spending time by himself and not worrying about what others think of him.

Blog 1 (Due 2/7 by 11:30 am)

For this blog, you are going to perform a semiotic analysis of yourself. Imagine that someone is looking at you right now, and write a description of yourself from their point of view using 3rd person point of view. In a well-developed paragraph, describe the signs that they see on your body (your clothes, hair, shoes, phone, etc.) and imagine how they would interpret those signs to make assumptions about your personality and identity.

For example, you might start out by writing something like this about yourself: “He is wearing a futuristic-looking bluetooth device around his neck that makes him seem like he cares about the latest technology and wants the world to know that he has the newest tech gadgets. I imagine that he has a job so that he can afford the bluetooth headset and the Android phone that he holds in his hands. While most of the people around him have iPhones, he has chosen an Android to show that he is an independent thinker who wants to be able to customize his phone and who doesn’t follow the crowd.”
