Congratulations on finishing your final exam!

Remember to check your CUNYfirst account frequently over the next few weeks to make sure your grades post and that you are marked as proficient in the CUNY Writing Requirement. Email me or Prof. Hellman (chellman@citytech.cuny.edu) if you have any questions or concerns. Register for Spring classes as soon as you are able to do so.

Our last class meeting is on Thursday, 12/19. Feel free to stop by and chat if you want to!

For Thursday, 12/12:

  • Type up cover letter using formatting style from the first page of this sample Cover Letter
  • Revise Essay 3 to include the cover letter as your first page and a Works Cited page as your final page. Check on how to cite your sources at the OWL MLA Format page
  • Bring Portfolio #3 to class
  • Bring your completed tutoring sheet to class

 


For Tuesday, 12/10:

  • Complete the Revision Packet for Essay 2
  • Write a complete draft of Essay 3 and bring in two typed copies. Be sure to include a works cited page.
      • Visit the Course Materials page for sample outlines to help you organize your essay.
      • Remember to look in your notes to find all of the parts of the essay you have already drafted!
      • Here is a sample citation for an article from an online database. If you have a different type of source (book, film, etc.) visit the OWL at Purdue MLA Formatting and Style Guide site for help.

 


For Thursday, 12/5:

  • Find at least one article from the City Tech library or library database that might help you find out what other solutions people have proposed or tried to solve your problem. Read it, annotate it, and bring it to class.

For Tuesday, 12/3:

  • Write out your detailed solution in 1-3 sentences
  • Find at least one article from the City Tech library or library database that can help you establish that your problem is, in fact, a problem. Read it, annotate it, and bring it to class.
    • The easiest way to do this is to go to https://library.citytech.cuny.edu/
    • Find the box that says “Find books, media, and more” and enter in some key words that have to do with your chosen topic.
    • Click the drop down menu on the left of the search box  and choose “everything”
    • Then click “search”

 

 

 

For Tuesday, 11/26:

  • Conduct some general internet research about your chosen problem to find out more about it. Take notes.
  • Make a list of 5-10 reasons that your problem is a problem

For Thursday, 11/21:

  • Read, annotate, and bring to class “The Long Goodbye: Mother’s Day in Federal Prison” (coyne-the long good-bye)
  • On Thursday our peer mentor Najma will give a registration workshop. She has suggested that you meet with your academic advisor prior to the class. You can find your advisor by going to your department or searching it on the City Tech website. Once you have a list of classes you need to take, you should bring it to class. She also suggests bringing a laptop, ipad/tablet or phone.

On Thursday, 11/14 you will be screening a documentary in the library media room. While you are watching the documentary, you should take notes on all of the elements of the criminal justice system that seem to be problems. The screening should take about 90 minutes, and when it is done you will be free to leave.

For Tuesday, 11/19:

To get to the media room in the library:

  • Enter the library from the 4th floor of the Library Building.
  • Once you enter the library, turn left.
  • Go up the small set of stairs under the exit sign.
  • The projection room is the second door on the left.

Class is cancelled on Thursday, 11/7/19!!

Essay 2 is still DUE on Blackboard on Friday, November 8th at 11:59 pm. Email me if you have any questions about this.

For Tuesday, 11/12:

  • Submit Portfolio 2
  • Read, annotate, and bring to class “More Testing, More Learning” (posted under Course Materials)

 

For Thursday, 11/7:

  • Portfolio 2 Due (in class). If you think you will need access to any of the portfolio items, make a copy or take a picture of them before turning it in.
  • Try to get to a tutoring session this week to work on revising your essay !!

Essay 2 Final Draft due (on Blackboard): Friday, November 8 by 11:59 pm


For Tuesday, 11:5:

  • Meet at the entrance to the library (4th floor, Library Building) at 6:00 pm
  • Write a complete draft of Essay 2. Remember to include the photograph in the document and a works cited page. Bring TWO typed copies.
  • Read the essay prompt for Essay 3 (essay 3 prompt proposing a solution f19)
As required by the college, I have calculated and posted your midsemester grades on Blackboard. The calculations include all work completed this semester up to (but not including) the Midterm Exam.
The grading scheme is as follows:
P=Passing work (C or above)
BL= Borderline (D)
U=Unsatisfactory (F)
SA=Stopped Attending
If you received a BL or a U, please make an appointment to speak with me and/or visit my office hours (Tu/Th 4:00-5:00 pm in Namm 503).

  • Library Orientation: Tuesday, November 5 at 6:00 pm. Meet in front of the library on the 4th floor of the Library Building. Don’t be late!

  • Essay 2 Final Draft due (on Blackboard): Friday, November 8 by 11:59 pm

For Thursday, 10/31:

  • Come to class prepared to take the midterm exam. You should develop a plan for budgeting your time, bring a dictionary, a way to keep track of time, and the annotated passage that I passed out in class today. Don’t forget to eat something before class! 🙂

  • Complete investigative research about your photo. Choose ONE of the research options in the Narrative-Essay-Research-Assignment handout and follow the instructions carefully in order to record your research.
  • There is NO reading assignment

For Tuesday, 10/22:

  • Choose two characters from your photo who will play a role in your story. Write out a dialogue between characters that includes:
      • Direct quotes
      • Paraphrasing
      • Speaker tags
  • Read, annotate and bring to class Cole-A Crime Scene at the Border

  • Complete your paragraph that describes your using all of the details you observed in your list (all 5 senses)

For Thursday, October 10:
  • Find an old photograph that you don’t know much about. It can be from your home or the home of your relatives, OR you can find a photograph from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s online image gallery (http://brooklynhistory.pastperfectonline.com/). (You may only use an image from one of these two sources! No Google image searches!) Whatever you choose, the photo should include a person or people and it should be intriguing to you.
  • Bring the actual photo or a digital version of it to class

Essay 1 DUE Thursday, 9/26 by 11:59 pm. Submit your essay on Blackboard
There is no class on Tuesday, October 1st!

  • Bring in Portfolio 1
  • Copy one paragraph from your essay onto a new piece of paper and bring it to class

  • Type out a complete draft of your essay in MLA format (do your best)
  • Bring TWO typed copies to class for a peer-review workshop

  • You do not have any homework assignment. If you would like to read Maya Angelou’s “Graduation,” you may do so, but it is no longer required.

  • Review your brainstorming and the Essay 1 Prompt. Decide which option you are going to write about for your essay (positive or negative experience with a teacher)
  • Print, read, annotate, and bring to class “Ericsson-The Ways We Lie

For Thursday, 9/12:
  • Read Bunn “How to Read Like a Writer” p. 81-82 (“What Should You Be Writing as You are Reading?”)
  • Review “Mother Tongue” and pick one “writerly choice” Tan made in her essay. Answer the 3 questions on the bottom of Bunn p. 81 about Tan’s writerly choice.

Thursday, 9/5 is a Monday schedule. Go to your Monday classes!

  • Read, annotate, and bring to class Bunn “How to Read Like a Writer” p 79-81 (“What Are Questions to Ask As You Are Reading?”)
  • Print, read, annotate and bring to class Tan “Mother Tongue
  • Choose TWO questions from Bunn p. 79-81 and answer them about “Mother Tongue” as you are reading.

For Tuesday, 9/3:
  • Read, annotate, and bring to class Bunn “How to Read Like a Writer” p. 74-75
    • Answer the following questions on the paper: What does it mean to “read like an architect?” What is one benefit of reading this way according to Bunn?

  • Read, annotate, and bring to class Bunn “How to Read Like a Writer” p. 71-73
    • Answer the following questions on the paper: Bunn offers a different approach to reading than most people are used to. What is it called? How are readers supposed to do it? Why should we read like this?
