My Essay # 6

Summary blog post of “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead

In the story name, “City Limits by Colson Whitehead”, the author and Narrator himself describes his perception about New York he knows. The story expresses a message that living in this very city can revolutionize you because in the reading the author mentioned in line saying, “That Canal Street used to be a canal. That Bryant Park used to be a reservoir. It’s all hokum.” This statement tells that the author hears much nonsense from people about New York being this, being that however he didn’t listen to their babbles and the reason was he cares about what he sees for himself now about the city limits. However, he also doesn’t like the fact that city being alter every single time, “Thousands of people pass that storefront every day, each one haunting the streets of his or her own Ney York, not one of them seeing the same thing.” Moreover, according to author’s perception about New York tells us that it doesn’t matter what we see today in this city, who knows tomorrow it will have something brand new, and therefore many of us going to visualize is what’s stuck on our head from yesterday about this city.

Revision:

In the story of who knows Brooklyn by Ben Mcgrath, the author described the difference perspective views of two people, Merlis and Manbeck, and how they know Brooklyn better. “Merlis has published Eighteen books of his own, fifteen about Brooklyn”, and on the other side Manbeck published his own latest, ” Historic photos of the Brooklyn bridge.” They both are historian, however they don’t get along with each other while still living in Brooklyn. ” He’s always trying to screw me,” Merlis said of Manbeck. He thinks Manbeck doesn’t consider him as a friend. “I have an idea that he doesn’t think history is fun.” Manbeck said. And here Manbeck criticizing Merlis of not being serious. So, the author shows here that, even living in same neighborhood there’s always competition happens.

Revision:

Reflection:

Throughout the semester we’ve covered many things in English class by discovering the history of Brooklyn.  In the beginning of the semester my classmates and I had the chance to visit Brooklyn Historical Society or BHS and learn about the histories of Brooklyn heights.  This expedition was a walking tour and it gave us the whole new knowledge about this very place than what we have had in our memory before.  I mean knowing that Brooklyn is an urban area now than where it used to be a suburb area or farm lands, and places such as Flatbush is the example of one of them.  Moreover, after the walking tour we’ve got the chance to visit inside Brooklyn Historical Society and view the artifacts such as map, books, diaries, etc.   According to BHS the places in Brooklyn living right now they were used to be part of English colonist and they’ve ruled here and other places for many centuries. Furthermore, if we can think of it today it will be a enormous research and also be challenging by not knowing where to start in terms of every historical points or times.  Therefore, in modern day, today, there’s historical places that exist in many places of New York, and one of them we should be thankful to is BHS.  And the reason is this place has many historical artifacts and written documents that can guide us through the knowledge about Brooklyn of yesterday and modern day today.  So, thanks to Brooklyn Historical Society and the amazing tour they have walked through us during the semester.

Essay 6: 2 Blog Post and Reflection Summary.

Walking Tour

The walking tour of Downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights is very interesting and I learned many new things during the tour. One of the most interesting things I learned is the boot scraper. It is the first time I heard of it. If I have walk pass those houses normally, I would never know what that is. Others things I learned are that Brooklyn uses to be its own city, and it joined New York City to become a greater city. So it could be one of the great cities to dominate the economy. During the tour, I also learned that one of the places around the school use to be a theater and because of a fire accident, over 300 people had die. It is one of the most drastic tragedies happen in Brooklyn during that time. I found that Henry Ward Beecher is very interesting. He is a great abolitionist and a famous person yet he is in one of the most notorious American trials for having an affair with a married women. I have learned that Brooklyn Height is protected by Landmarks Preservation Law. Many of the building were protected and can’t be rebuilt. Many of the building and architecture are very unique. Upon arriving at Brooklyn Bridge Park, I find the view very astonishing. I never get to see the city this way before. During the tour, I thought we have walked a long way, but later on I find out that we only walked about a few block.  The diversity in this area makes the appearance that we have walked a long way. With only a few blocks from City Tech, you get to see a completely different neighborhood.

Maps

The day when we went to the Brooklyn Historical Society, we get to see many different kind of map from different period of times. We were placed in groups to analyze the variety of maps. We were to do a worksheet on how the map is different, what is distinguishable, what is unique of each map. I learned many maps were first drawn by hand then later painted out. Map use to cost a lot, and most people will buy it for collection, and people that could afford it are most likely rich.  It is not something that the poor will have, and if they do have it, they will most likely keep it in a secure place. Many maps are served for different purpose. Some map shows where government building and residential building are, each laying out in different colored section. Other maps are to show the subways system and some maps show the lots of the land.  Maps also could also show the elevations of landscape; it is useful for people that travel a lot. I have also learned that before, maps are mostly copied from older map and put new picture or design on it, so people might think it’s a new map, and they will buy them. I learned that in order to keep a map or any historical paper items in good condition, you have to keep it in a dark storage room. Light could damage the map overtime. To prevent maps from degrading, it is best not to fold your map or roll it up. Overall I have learned many new things on the trip to Brooklyn Historical Society.  It is a very enjoying experience for me.

Reflection

Working with the Brooklyn Historical Society has been a very enjoying experience, it makes the class much more fun. It is sort of like going on a adventure exploring different areas of Brooklyn.  You not only learn, you also gets to have fun.  I have learned a lot from the trips to Brooklyn Historical Society, even thought I am from Brooklyn, I don’t know most of the area and many of Brooklyn’s history.  I still remember upon walking inside the Brooklyn Historical Society’s library, I find the library looks magnificent, it is like a library straight from the 1800s. The architectures inside is very beautiful, it is a great place to visit.  I found seeing the maps and visiting the place up close  is much more better then reading about Brooklyn in books or articles. I have learned the different types of maps, their usage and how maps were once items that only the wealthy owns.  Map during that time were mostly used as collection, people wouldn’t actually bring it with them.  I have learned another interesting things, the boot scrapper that are outside the houses in Brooklyn Height.  If I have pass by the house regularly I would have no idea what  it is and what it is use for.  We have also learned many other stuff,  we get to see a diary written by a person in 1800s, we get also get to see old tickets. In conclusion, visiting the Brooklyn Historical Society was a lot of fun, I have learned a lot about Brooklyn’s history and it makes the class more exciting and adventurous. I hope in the future, my classes will also be this fun.

Reflection on visit to BHS

Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in Brooklyn in the 1900’s? Well I did and I was able to find out the answer through Brooklyn Historical Society. My expierence at BHS was an interesting one. We first started out by getting a tour of the area around City tech and Brooklyn Heights. Throughout the tour our tour guide Julie Golia was telling us the history behind Brooklyn how it was its on borough, how there was a fire near our school that happened many years ago at a theater. These facts were interesting because me living in Brooklyn all my life did not even know that.

Our second expiernce with BHS we got a chance to look at old maps even subway maps from the 1970’s. This map was really confusing specifically because if you compare that subway map to todays subway map there two different things. Our maps of today are more detailed and have every stop marked down. Now on the subway map from the 1970’s that map was confusing it just looked like colors everywhere. These two have really showed me how when history changes so do maps.  At BHS we also go to look through the archives. Looking through archives fascinate me so much because we are actually able to look at these documents these pieces of history and see how they looked and how much things cost compare to now.

After all my expierence at BHS was a great one and it made me realized how much fares have gone up. If I get the chance to go to BHS again I would like to look at a lot more archives.

reflection

When i walked into my speech class the first day of my college career, i didn’t know what to expect. Than Professor Davis and Professor Rosen walked in and introduced themselves. They explained how the class will work and what they expect of us this semester. When i found out that this was going to be a combined class, i was kind of confused and didn’t know if it was a good or bad thing.

We went on our walking tour of the Brooklyn Heights and I was very surprised. My first week of college and I’m having field trips already. Nice! Well at first i thought it was just a walk around the neighborhood to check out what’s around City Tech. During the tour i was actually surprised on how much fascinating history there is in Brooklyn. We saw the old architechture of the homes in Brooklyn Heights. The outside of the homes are very antique. I actually learned a lot during the walking tour. The homes in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood are protected by a law that states that people can’t change the outside of the homes. Because of that law, we can still see boot scrapers outside these old homes. We also went by the promanade and saw the extraodrinary view overlooking lower manhattan’s skyscrapers.

I enjoyed the Telling Brooklyn Stories learning community because i really learned a lot of history about Brooklyn. During the classes we had assignments that encouraged me to take part of what i found interesting and learning more about it. Visiting the Brooklyn Historical Society made the class a lot more interesting because we worked with artifacts from Brooklyn’s history. We looked through old maps and journals that people have wrote in the 18th and 19th century. If i had a chance to take a class like this one more time, i definitely would.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Essay #6

The Brooklyn Navy Yard has a very fascinating history. It’s been in Brooklyn for over 200 years. The U.S. Navy occupied it for most of it’s time, but since they left it has been an industrial yard for a lot of Brooklyn’s businesses. The walking tour would benefit going through the Brooklyn Navy Yard because we can learn a lot of history on the way there and inside the premises. It would be a good stop on the walking tour because if someone is not interesting in the history of the BNY, than they can enjoy the things that they have to offer at the yard now. It has a lot of interesting factories that manufacture the food we see everyday and even film studios that make the movies we watch. It has something for everyone, and I’m sure that whoever would go on the next walking tour of Brooklyn Heights would love to visit the Brooklyn Navy Yard and enjoy what it has to offer.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard was a big aspect of Brooklyn’s history. For 160 years Brooklyn had a very powerful navy that occupied the yard, building and fixing ships. The government purchased the land in 1801 for $40,000 in 1801. According to a book about the Brooklyn Navy Yard by John Bartlestone, when Lieutenant Jonathan Thorn took command in 1806, the BNY was just beginning its existence. In 1911, Captain L.S. Von Duzer proposed to move the Navy Yard right over the Harbor to a park Communipaw New Jersey, but the ultimate decision was to maintain the yard in Brooklyn. Throughout all the military years at the BNY, they built 17 battleships and carriers and repaired over 5,000 Navy Vessels wounded in the Atlantic Ocean. In all the different wars throughout the years, the number of employees at the yard was growing gradually. By the time of WWII came around, the workforce at the BNY increased to 70,000 people. Reading the Lucy story by Jennifer Egan in class made me realize that at one point woman occupied the BNY. Since we needed a lot of men to go out and fight during WWII, women were hired for the first time to work at the Yard as technicians and mechanics. The U.S.S. Missouri a.k.a. “Mighty Moe” was built in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This was the ship that Japan had surrendered on thus ending WWII for the U.S. Who knew that things manufactured in our hometown of Brooklyn can have such a big impact on the world. Who knows what would happen if we didn’t have a Navy Yard here. Things might’ve been a lot different here now. Because of the Brooklyn Navy Yard the U.S. survived all of America’s wars until it finally closed down in 1966.

New York City bought the 300 acre complex in 1967 for just a little more than it originally cost, $24 million. Immediately after the absence of Navy troops, the city did not know how to regain the 70,000 jobs that were lost since the BNY closed. When the yard reopened in 1971, an article from the daily news states, “They considered the automobile industry, a steel mill, moving the entire handbag industry here. None of them worked.” (Denis Hamill) About four years later, they figured it out and decided to make an industrialized park out of it. Right now, the BNY has 275 tenants and over 5,800 employees working in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The largest tenant at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is Steiner Studios. With the largest sound stages on the east coast, they plan to take the 20-acre of development land that is left of the BNY and develop a film program affiliated with Brooklyn College that will be at affordable prices. A document in the daily news said that “Brooklyn College will be creating a state-of-the-art film school here, where for $50,000, a kid can get a film school education that would cost $250,000 at NYU. With the largest movie studio in the city right here.” (Denis Hamill). Some of the other major manufacturers at the Brooklyn Navy Yard are manufacturers of Sweet n Low, B&H photo and electronics warehouse and Shiel Medical labs, which are the biggest privately owned labs in New York. The BNY is actually a very popular place for a business. An article from the New York Times states that mayor Bloomberg wants the entertainment industry that’s developing in the Brooklyn Navy Yard to continue growing and accumulating jobs. The Brooklyn Navy Yard website states that “Since the fall of 2006, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation have announced an eight-building expansion including over 1.7 million square feet of new industrial space, 2,000 new jobs and $250 million private investment”. It’s a great thing that the Brooklyn Navy Yard we have now will continue growing and serving the Brooklyn Community.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a big concept of Brooklyn’s history. It has survived all of America’s wars, built 17 ships and fixed over 5,000 navy vessels and carriers. After the absence of navy troops, N.Y.C. bought the 300 acre complex and made an industrial park out of it. Right now it has over 275 tenants and is employing over 5,800 employees. The BNY is a great stop for the walking tour. It has over 200 years of history and now that the yard is full, there is something interesting for everyone. If you’re not really interested in the history, than you can find one of the local businesses at BNY very interesting.

Essay#6 reflection

You can say it started off as I stepped into the English classroom. It was time for a new chapter in life, and many things to come ahead. I would only roam around from class to class and discover nothing new.College no longer felt like high school and classes no longer seemed like fun. Eng1101 was not a class, it was more of an adventure. 

Walking out from city tech to Brooklyn heights was as if the whole class stepped into a time matchine.I saw women with pretty long elegnat dresses and their child by their side. Horses with wagons transporting men to work. Houses where all with big doors and windows to allow the sun to shine upon them. As people entered their home men would rub their shoes against the boot scraper to clean any horse waste. I not only saw how people lived but saw all of Brooklyn throughout out the maps.Brooklyn changed right infront of me as I skimmed my eyes through all the different maps. From Brooklyn in the 1600s to brooklyn in 2005,I was able to use the railway tickets and move around all Brooklyn. I read letters that took me back to when emails or texting was not invited. In just one semester, I took a time matchine and went around Brooklyn.

From the tour I saw an old town with hardworking men going to work and women taking care of their children. I also took a look at Brooklyn from a birds point of view with the use of a map, and transported my self back to history  by reading letters from the 1800s and exploring railway tickets. I was able to take a close look at my surrounding, and from this experience I was able to tell my story.

Essay#6 Blog post revision2

 To every student city tech is just another college. To me it is just where I am for now. All I knew about it was that it was located an hour and five minutes away from home. In a place called Brooklyn, jay St.Starting the tour behind city tech I was able to see the back of my school. To me Brooklyn was just from city tech ,to the train stop. Brooklyn soon becomes something more,and my school became a book of history.The story we heard at the beginning about the theater in Johnson St now part of city tech, in a way amazed me. To know that our school was once a theater were over 300 people were killed should scare us a little, but because of this incident the way building were made changed drastically, due to the fact that having a safe building does safe peoples lives. I think that  through out the trip everyone learned something that they will always remember. It even allows us to show off to people of what we know about Brooklyn. From the famous boot scraper to Brooklyn once being its own city, everyone on this trip learned to see Brooklyn from a different perspective. Around the middle of the trip we were able to kind of have a taste of both worlds. Only a few block from each other we transitioned from City Tech to Brooklyn Heights. Due to the fact that Brooklyn Heights had landmarks, I believe it made the experience so much better. As the years go by things always change, but it was really nice to see a part of history with our own eyes. What if all buildings were allowed to be ruined? We would only have photographs to allow us to see how peopled lived back in the days. The whole experience just took me back in time.

Essay#6 Blog post revision1

When one is on the train we can easily identify the tourist. The one holding the map. We now live in a society where we can find things very easily.Maps no longer seem to have so much importance in our society. Seeing some old maps today made me realize how easy we have it with so much technology around us. We can just type an adress on google maps and instantly have a picture of it and a virtual look at where the place is located. There’s no need for an index or color coordination, we just type the adress and everything is given. Today’s  maps are more specific and they don’t only come in paper but also in a computer, phone or even a gps. In a way I was amazed on how hard someone worked to create a map. From the color to the drawing, every detail of the place was located on the map.It did not only include a place but some even included how deep and ocean was.One can tell by the map how long it really took  for the map to be made. Now a days  it has become easier to identify a location because every street has a name and every borough is identified with a name, such  as Queens,Bronx,Brooklyn, or Manhattan.It probably took a long period of time for someone to create a correct map. Getting around was harder back in the days than what is now.For a map to be made,one probably had to travel around and take notes on what they saw.Through out time it has been easier to make a map.It can be made in the computer instead of hand drawn,and photographs can be used to locate a place. Every map has it’s won history and story to tell.

Overlapping New Yorks: Columbus Park

On my walk around City Tech I walked towards the Jay Street-MetroTech train station. I made a right into a walkway next to the Marriott Hotel towards Adams Street. I crossed Adams Street and went up the stairs. The Supreme Court building is to your right and the park is right there. I walked around the park; first thing I saw was the fountain and the Christopher Columbus statue in front of the Supreme Court. I walked down and saw the Robert F. Kennedy statue. As I started to walk away from the courthouse, the park started becoming more natural. The more I walked down the park I noticed the change in scenery. Then, I saw the Henry Ward Beecher statue which we observed during our walk tour. Therefore, I had a good recollection of that statue.

I saw multiple overlapping New Yorks. I saw commercial, man-made, and natural all in one place. Across the street from Columbus Park were TD Bank and more banks. It was very commercial on that side. As you walk down the park towards the Henry Ward Beecher statue it is calmer and quieter. There is not as much going on as by the Supreme Court and Borough Hall building. It is mostly surrounded with trees, gardens, and a few statues. This is where I saw the man-made and natural juxtaposition come into play. Especially by the Robert F. Kennedy statue, because of the grass and trees surrounding it. It is like the trees are in jail. The reason for this theory is because of the fences that surround the gardens and trees. This causes one to be restrained from the natural objects. One cannot physically feel the trees or walk over the grass. The gardens are beautiful, it is just saddening that the natural objects we can feel are less maintained than the ones we cannot feel. The fact that the Supreme Court building is in a park partially explains the man-made and natural juxtaposition as well. Due to the fact that there is a court inside a park surrounded by nature.

I chose Columbus Park because ever since the walking tour I was interested in looking around and observing the park as a whole, and be able to summarize my experience. Columbus Park was my favorite place during the walking tour, therefore this assignment made me want to go back. I thought this was the perfect place for this assignment for me because I loved the park during the walking tour and we needed somewhere around City Tech. I did not have enough time to focus on it during the walking tour because it was limited. Therefore, I went back to make sure I get a clearer picture. The park is like the gateway to Brooklyn Heights for me. Columbus Park tells me a story of rich history in Brooklyn.

The whole reading of “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead is perfect for overlapping New Yorks and how one shapes their own skyline of New York. Even if they were to change Columbus Park, I would still picture it how it was when we went on the walking tour and when I walked around it that day. I would still have that juxtaposition stuck in my head of Borough Hall, the Columbus Statue, and all of the gardens. If the Columbus statue were taken down today, and I walked by Columbus Park tomorrow then I would say “Hey, that’s where the Columbus Statue was at”. According to Colson Whitehead, one “can never make proper goodbyes” (Whitehead 3). The park made me think about how different New York can get in just a matter of a couple steps. You never get a warning or a heads-up. You are just stuck with the memories of how things were when you first saw them. If someone were to go after the statue was gone, then whatever is there is what they will keep with them in their memories. Just like I keep the Columbus Statue in my memory since it is what I saw there when I first went to Columbus Park. In the article “Who Knows Brooklyn” in The New Yorker, Merlis spoke about not doing books on gentrified neighborhoods (McGrath 2). After my experience in Columbus Park and reading the article, I realized that there is no other place in the world there are so many overlaps. My area was not gentrified but more of an overlap of nature and man-made. There are mostly hotels and once you cross Court Street into Brooklyn Heights the neighborhood only gets better. Yet at the same time the experience helped me realize the many overlaps in the city. New York changes in so many different ways neighborhood by neighborhood, it is a city filled with overlaps.

In summary, there is a juxtaposition of nature and man-made objects in Columbus Park. The fences around the trees can make one feel restrained from nature. The trees and grass behind the fences look better kept than the nature objects out in the open in the park. Hopefully, one will take this trip with the directions I gave above and analyze the park the same way I did or maybe not. One can also have a different experience and maybe have a different juxtaposition.

Essay #6: Reflection

Working with the Brooklyn Historical Society was an excellent experience. I had never had the chance to work with a Historical Society until this year. My class and I got to see many special things. We started out our semester with the BHS by taking a walking tour around Brooklyn Heights. We then got to visit the BHS’s library, where we got to learn about historical Brooklyn maps. Later on we got the chance to revisit the BHS’s library, where we then learned about historical documents.

The walking tour around Brooklyn Heights was a great experience for me. Before the walking tour I had no idea what Brooklyn Heights was. When we started walking through Brooklyn Heights while our tour guide, Julie Golia told us interesting facts and story’s about the neighborhood it made me appreciate Brooklyn more. It was interesting for me to learn that Brooklyn Heights had historical landmark districts. I would have never got to learn about how Brooklyn Heights was once farmland with chickens roaming around. My class and I also got to see many other areas during this tour. We learned about the Plymouth Church, we got to see the promenade, and we learned about important houses that are now being sold.

The first time my class and I visited the BHS, I was amazed to see how old fashioned the library looked. My class and I then found out that altering the library in any way was not permitted. During this library session I learned about different maps such as subway maps. It was interesting to learn that maps use to be hand written and the only way to color them was by using water colors, since printers didn’t exist at the time. Our last visit to the library was also interesting because I had never viewed historical documents in person.

In conclusion, working with the BHS was an excellent experience for me. Not only did I learn what Brooklyn Heights was, but I also got to learn about Brooklyn’s history.
