First Reading: “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead

This is the first reading for ENG 1101, “City Limits” from The Colossus of New York, by Colson Whitehead.  Once you click the link, scroll down to the part that says “Read an Excerpt.” The page contains more than just the first section, “City Limits,” so you’ll want to stop when you get to the next section, “Port Authority,” unless you want to keep reading. Please bring a copy of the reading with you to class on Monday–you can cut and paste the text into a document, or you can more print from the screen.  If you want to read more of The Colossus of New York, you might look to see which sections are available on Google Books or Amazon.com. Our college library has copies as well.

For homework, you’ll need to select a word to add to our vocabulary list, and follow the instructions there for defining and explaining the word. It should be clear in your entry that you now understand how the word is used, or what the sentence means now that you understand the word.
