HW 10/27

WRITING: The source is by DeArbea Walker whose work has appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer, Fox Business, Yahoo, NBC News and Deadspin. She explains how women of color are less accessible to contraceptive care or reproductive services. Latina/African America women are also at higher risks of pregnancy related deaths than a white woman. Also the incarcerated percentage of colored woman is higher leading to denied maternal care. Many politicians, who are democrats, have fought and will continue to fight for the codification of Roe which means the right to have an abortion without undue interference. Many big name politicians have came out and mentioned that democrats should do everything necessary to make the right to an abortion become law. Many woman of color led organizations have made it important to make the right to choose legislated to law.

QUOTES: “Black and Hispanic women are, respectively, three and two times more likely to have an unintended pregnancy than white women. Nationally, Black women had 37% of abortions, white women had 34%, and Hispanic women had 22%”

“This freedom—to choose and to exercise our choices is what we’ve fought and died for. Brought here in chains, and worked like mules, bred like beasts, whipped one day sold the next for 244 years were held in bondage … Now once again somebody is trying to say that we can’t handle freedom of choice. Only this time they are saying African American women can’t think for themselves and therefore can’t be allowed to make serious decisions.”

WRITE: The article has many great points about Roe. She uses the words of politicians that are huge names in our country , Bernie Sanders and AOC which are big democrat politicians. These words have big impact as they are somewhat leaders in the country. I believe that by using those people will listen one way or another as it is their jobs as politicians to change things. Also the urgency to at least try and make it happen plays a big role. The target audience will also use this article as a way to try and convince people to support and help make a change.

The author’s tone in this article seems very serious and also concerning as Roe got overturned. The article came out when it was overturned as it seems to bring awareness to the biggest change that can effect women of color especially. Pregnancy related deaths are higher risks in a colored woman than the white woman. This makes it worse for the colored and unfortunate because they already didn’t have much contraceptive care and reproductive services. The article is to inform the reader about Roe being overturned and what it is like for colored women now. They feel like they do not have freedom of their choices just like how it was back then. The country is moving backwards and not forward.
