HW : 1.2

When Mike Bunn writes ā€œYou are already an authorā€ at first I thought it meant that while Iā€™m reading I have to think like a writer, an author but he truly meant that you are an author example right now Iā€™m writing . Or when I text to my friends, When Iā€™m writing an essay these are ways that make you a writer ,writing based on your opinions and thoughts all your work thatā€™s a reason that makes us an author. I write everyday I use my phone to write when I text ,when I need to share some stories to family about certain things. When I do that Iā€™m sharing my story based on what happened or happens to me or anyone and the words I use are important itā€™s what helps them understand my feelings, my emotions, my thoughts that way they can sort of feel what Iā€™m telling them, being in my position. While reading ā€œHow to Read Like a Writerā€ itā€™s helping me to realize especially in college I shouldnā€™t just read to just read but to understand it and to know how to feel the words that Iā€™m reading to better understand it. That way when I write I just put myself in the place of an author and a reader so it can make a better sense to me and learn to be creative and open minded on the words I write and read.

What I took from Mike Bunn and his words Ā was to want to learn how to better read a story to believe the words you both write and read at the same time. In the book he says ā€œThe goal as you read like a writer is to locate what you believe are the most important writerly choicesā€¦Then you can go one step further and imagine what different choices the author might have made instead,ā€(Page 72). That stuck to me because I would never understand why you would have to care better of believe what you read if itā€™s just something you just have to do but. Itā€™s what will make you better at what you want to do like write.

Homework 1.2

There are numerous ways to read, yet there are typically just two. Reading like a writer involves trying to figure out how the text you are reading was put together in order to learn how to ā€œbuildā€ one yourself.Mike Bunnā€™s essay Reading like a writer explores the ways of how to properly understand what you are reading about. He helps you understand that you have to read word by word and sentence by sentence just like a writer. By understanding the way an author writes you are not just a reader but a writer too. A text, a post on social media or any letter that you could have written classifies you as a writer. But Mike Bunn goes into more depth about comprehending the type of reading you chose. Every body has a different genre of what they wanna read about. You can interpret a work of reading as if you are writing because you are putting yourself in the authors point of view. Just as when you tell a part of your life to someone else, you are telling your story and someone is putting themselves through your point of view. If you read as you were writing you will understand the structure of many different types of writing, as well as the purpose. We are also able to analyze the imagery and any other techniques in the writing. In addition to providing the background information on his life at the time he discovered this reading technique, he paints a picture with vivid details He compares us to an ā€œarchitectā€ because in a way they focus on the construction, form and features. Mike Bunn quotes ā€œwhen we read like writers we understand and participate in the writing.ā€ This means that it helps us understand and interact with the material to read like a writer.

HW 1.2

You are already an author, according to Mike Bunn’s statement in the article “How to read like a writer.” A writer is typically thought of as someone who has written a book or other piece of literature, but according to Mike Bunn, even if we haven’t, we have nonetheless created or written our own stories. When you tell someone about something that happened to you yesterday, they are viewed as the audience or reader of your story as you are the author. You are the author of your life, which is like a story.Additionally, Mike Bunn advises that you should read with the intention of discovering “the author’s purpose for this piece of writing?” because doing so can improve your comprehension of whatever it is that you are reading. To understand how anything came to be the way it is when writing a story, you must think like the author. Reading Mike Bunn’s post demonstrates a different approach to readingā€”one that involves going deeper and analyzing how one sentence or paragraph constructs the one that follows it rather than simply reading one word before moving on to the next. According to Mike, who structures his reading, he “should change the name and call this Reading Like an Architect” in the essay. This method of reading adds a twist to the fundamental reading skills taught in high school; rather than trying to summarize the entire text and determine its main points, we look at each word in turn and determine how it connects to the next word in the sentence, breaking everything down to make it simpler to understand. I’ll attempt to do this more when I read and write because it seems to clarify everything for me to understand. Usually, when I read, I get stuck because I want to read the broad picture when I should be taking it step by step.
