Romans have influenced the Western justice system. Although the Roman justice system was extremely harsh in its punishments, it did serve as a rough outline of how court proceedings happen today. The Romans made significant contributions to the development of legal systems. The concept of “innocent until proven guilty” and the establishment of a legal code have had a lasting impact on modern legal systems worldwide. The Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire also provided models of governance that influenced politics throughout centuries. Roman law had a major influence over the modern day laws of many countries. Legal ideas like trial by jury, civil rights, contracts, personal property, legal wills, and corporations all stem from Roman law. The executive branch of Rome during the Republic was the consuls, the legislative was the assemblies who made the laws and the Roman Senate which decreed them, and the judges were the judiciary. The people’s assembly served to vote for the consuls in the same way common people vote for elected officials in the present day. During the Empire, the executive branch was the Roman emperor, the legislative was the assemblies/Senate, and the judiciary remained the judges. The Roman military was the most efficient and powerful of its time and the Romans developed many aspects of military life still in use today. Basic training was mandated in order to instill discipline as well as skill in battle and use of arms. The Roman legions were equalitarian in that a soldier of the lowest class could rise through the ranks to become an officer. The Roman army had a corps of engineers, logistics and support staff, ordnance corps, communications divisions, and skilled medical support staff.

Key information:

  • Roman legions relied on immaculately arranged formations that were well-organized and able to adapt on the battlefield.
  • Roman military officers demonstrated in battle their capacity for individual decision-making, such as the flanking action at Cynoscephalae in which the Macedonians were completely crushed by the maneuver of a military tribune.

Conclusion: In summary, the legacy of the Roman civilization is multi-faceted and continues to shape various aspects of contemporary society. From legal principles and governance structures to language, architecture, and cultural values, the Romans have left an enduring imprint on the course of human history. The Roman Empire conquered the entirety of the Mediterranean. Something I found interesting is the impact they have on today’s world. Many things that we have or adapt have come from Rome such as technology and the government system. I think school should talk more and teach about ancient Rome and the impact it had in our society, and what we have learned from past events. People who like history or like law should key into ancient Rome; this is something you can learn a lot from. I found this research topic fun and exciting because it’s something I barely got to learn about in high school. Going back in history and seeing a dominant force that Rome was and the success they had for centuries is unheard of.

Topic Question: What has been the legacy of the Roman civilization in terms of language, culture, and governance?

The most significant linguistic legacy of the Romans is the Latin language. Latin served as the official language of the Roman Empire and continued to be used in various forms for centuries. It evolved into the Romance languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Much of the literature of the world has been greatly influenced by the literature of the ancient Romans. Latin root words are also the foundation for many English words. The English alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet. Roman literature, written primarily in Latin, has been a foundational influence on Western literature. Latin has been the language of the Roman Catholic Church for centuries. Ecclesiastical Latin, a distinct form of the language, is used in religious rituals, documents, and teachings. It continues to be a significant part of the Church’s linguistic heritage. After the decentralization of political power in late antiquity, Latin developed locally in the Western provinces into branches that became the Romance languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Catalan, Occitan and Romanian. In summary, the Roman civilization’s legacy in terms of language is extensive and multifaceted. Latin’s impact on the development of Romance languages, its contributions to academic and scientific terminology, and its enduring presence in various aspects of culture and education all attest to the lasting influence of the Roman linguistic heritage. Latin is still taught in many educational institutions around the world. While it is no longer a spoken language, it is studied for its historical and linguistic importance.

Key information:

  • “Golden Age of Roman Poetry,” poets such as Virgil, Horace, and Ovid produced works that have had an everlasting impact”.
  • “Ancient Romans spoke Latin, which spread throughout the world with the increase of Roman political power. Latin became the basis for a group of languages referred to as the “Romance languages”.

Rome had the most influence on the modern world. For thousands of years the Roman Empire flourished, we can still see evidence of it in art, architecture, technology, literature, language, and law. Rome had a big impact on art and architecture, Roman influence in forms and structures throughout the development of Western culture. Rome was heavily influenced by ancient Greece, they were able to make improvements to certain borrowed Greek designs and inventions. They used columns that became more decorative and less structural in Roman buildings. Ancient Romans created curved roofs and large-scale arches, which were able to support more weight than the post-and-beam construction the Greeks used. The arches served as the foundation for the massive bridges and aqueducts the Romans created. The arches of the Colosseum are made out of cement, a remarkably strong building material the Romans made with what they had at hand: volcanic ash and volcanic rock. Scientists believe that the use of this ash is the reason that structures like the Colosseum still stand today.Roman underwater structures proved to be even sturdier. Seawater reacting with the volcanic ash created crystals to make the concrete more durable. Today, scientists study Roman concrete, hoping to match the success of the ancient master builders. Roman architectural styles and engineering techniques have had a lasting impact. Elements like arches, columns, and domes are still prominent in contemporary architecture. The Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts are just a few examples of iconic Roman architectural achievements. Roman art, influenced by Greek traditions, produced statues, mosaics, and frescoes. These artistic expressions continue to inspire artists and architects worldwide.

Key Information:

  • “Sculptural art of the period has proven to be fairly durable, too. Romans made their statues out of marble, fashioning monuments to great human achievements and achievers”.
  • “The game-loving ancients also built large amphitheaters, including the Colosseum. The sports stadiums we see today, with their oval shapes and tiered seating, derive from the basic idea the Romans developed”.

Rough Draft

Is a person’s privacy secure in the hands of social media?  Know the truth.

Who isn’t on social media nowadays? I myself decided to join social media at the age of 15 without knowing or reading the rights I have with having these social medias Instagram,Facebook,TikTok, and so much more. People have the habit to not read the long rights of these social media that want you to approve too and you just skip to the bottom and say accept , that was a mistake and you’ll find out why. This being a bibliography is writing what catches me to study more of what I am interested in to be able to learn more both me and the readers. I’m sure just for myself and others reading will get caught up on this since it’s social media, a database that mostly everyone uses. Social media is basic in most people’s eyes so why not talk about it , why not learn more about it since we use it on a daily basis, just like that I need to know more. Although I wished I knew more about when I decided to be on social media from the age 13 and now seeing how the world has progressed with kids being on social media by the age 1 even if it’s their parents controlling it.  While the world of social media changes exactly how much they change with the security of your privacy, do they tell you what they can or cannot see? I didn’t think about it that much until. One day my friend got hacked by someone from a whole other country and was able to control her social media page got her page back after a whole week … a whole week that a stranger was able to see her messages and much more, on an app that everyone uses and supposedly provides top security somehow these hackings have been getting popular throughout the years.

Learning and researching the rights people have Data privacy laws was eye opening. You don’t seem to care much about something you use everyday until you look and learn more about from the New York Times “The State of Consumer Data Privacy Laws in the US (And Why It Matters)” published by Thorin Klosowski “Currently, privacy laws are a cluttered mess of different sectoral rules. “Historically, in the US we have a bunch of disparate federal [and state] laws,” said Amie Stepanovich, executive director at the Silicon Flatirons Center at Colorado Law. “[These] either look at specific types of data, like credit data or health information,” Stepanovich said, “or look at specific populations like children, and regulate within those realms” . What they are basically saying is these privacy laws that were created from the state are disordered and in the country I live in the US the laws here are diverse. To understand it more clearly the US doesn’t have a singular law that covers the privacy of all types of data that puts that any person is able to look at anything specific about you whether you know about it or not.

It’s wrong it doesn’t feel safe if all a person wants to do is just be on social media but since there isn’t no law that puts a person into a none privacy agreement because the database you apply to their network in now owe to them because there are no federal privacy laws regulating many companies, they’re pretty much free to do what they want with the data. The companies that have your data don’t have to notify you if they share or sell your data to (data brokers), if your data is breached or exposed to unauthorized parties there isn’t any national law standards for them to follow to notify you. People, myself included, think our data , our privacy are protected until we consumers aren’t able to understand the information that supposedly these companies are supposed to help with. That goes with when you open a website or sign into social media you see those long paragraphs or “Cookies” that you just go all the way to the bottom to press “ Accept” we all do it. Those companies know people who wanna pass through it just won’t read it and I’m sure if you did the meaning when you see that your information is now in their database.
