By Wednesday night: post a narrative scene that you’ve witnessed which shows people behaving/interacting in ways that make you think of internet addiction. I want a vivid scene, filled with details on setting, character(s), action, conflict, and your own reflections.
I have a little brother that enjoys being glued on my computer. After the first week after my birthday in which I got my PC my brother pretty much hog the computer. It was the first day of our break and as soon as I got back home, I rushed to my room. There I found my brother already faced glued to my computer. It was the first day of our break so I decided to let him have it for the day. In the next day, I was greeted with my brother already on the computer. I didn’t care so much so I went on with my day and I went out. during the fourth day, I really wanted to use my computer so I informed him to get off. It took him 30 mins just to get off. After one week I checked a number of hours my brother had been on my computer playing one game and it came up to about 100 hours.
A calm Sunday morning me and about 7 other friends decided to grab breakfast at ihop on ralph avenue. Of course we had to wait on a table because it was a large party. While waiting i noticed that we all were in our phones. I mean face in not saying a word to each other. Once our table was ready we sat down and looked at the menu. I order the same thing every time i go, real eggs, hashbrowns and steak nibblets. So i proceeded to keep being on instagram. Periodically we would all look up and share a post that we found funny. One of my friends noticed and said lets do something different. Lets stack our phones on top of each other and the first one to touch their phone pays for everyone. Nobody wanted that so we were forced to interact with each other. Jokes started flying and we started to have a good time. In between we would fake reach for our phones then be like naaaa. What made it even worse was when the food came it looked so delicious that nobody had the opportunity to take a picture of their meal to post it. As do everyone on social networks (have no clue y). At the end of the meal we asked for the bill. As soon as the checked reached we all grabbed our phones at the same time and laughed. Thats the first time that we all had to indulge in each others conversations and actually interact with another. To be honest that was the first time i can actually said we had fun going out and we didnt even do anything major.
On a Thursday night I was on the A train going home. I am doing my regular routine turn my music on and put the volume all the way up so I can’t hear nobody conversation or noise. While the ride home I notice three teenagers talking about another girls makeup on the train. I didn’t pay this no mind until I notice one of the teenager recording the other female on snapchat. In my head I am I said this will cause a conflict soon. Then just like what I said an conflict happened. The other female notice she was getting recorded and confronted the teenager about why she is recording her. I was so into this conflict I turn off my music to hear the words being thrown at each other. The only reason why this conflict didn’t escalated because the train stopped on Utica Ave and the teenagers got off. This whole conflict started because one teenager wanted to record the other female with the over do makeup for social media which could have been fine without it.
Imagine a young boy about 17 years of age during fall of 2016 in high school, this boy had a passion for video games. His passion was so great that whenever he had the chance, he would play from 10 am to 7 pm all day. He was in love with video games that he couldn’t stop thinking about it. He would rush downstairs to the basement after breakfast and sit down and enter the world of gaming. Once he picked up the controller and turned on the console, nothing could pull him away from it. Sometimes he would not even eat anything just to continue playing. This was the only thing that allowed him to enter Zen mode. Once he was in the only thing to pull him out was his own fatigue. After a couple weeks, the games started to affect his academics. He was once one of the top students in his class but ended up near the bottom of the top ten and frankly, he didn’t give a damn. Until his Mom stepped up and told him about what the games was doing to him. She yelled, “I WARNED YOU ABOUT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOUR GRADES DROPPED OLUDARA”. As a consequence, she took the console and hid it until his grades were increased to a certain interval. In his mind she forcefully ripped his “love” away from him. However, it was only then he realized that what he had wasn’t passion, but an addiction. Is the event in your mind? That was me 1 year ago. I was addicted to video games so much that it was starting to affect my education. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and with every session I have played, the lower my score on the next test. This is the story of my addiction.
Me and my group of friends were out playing basketball on a Saturday evening. One of our particular friends named Darrian is always on his phone and he never seems to let go of it . He always has it on him even if he’s playing basketball. We told him to put his phone in one of my other friends bookbag so that it could be safe because we assumed he would play ball with us . But we were on our way so we didn’t think that he would not play . So when we go there we were gonna play 3 on 3 and we told him to come play and he said no . I said come on bro stop being a bitch and he said alright cool whatever . The rest of us got mad and started telling him to come so that we could play again but he kept getting aggravated and more aggravated . This made me think about how online addiction changes people . We kept telling him to play until he finally decided to play . We told him to put his phone in my friend Davids bookbag but Darrian declined . In the middle of the basketball game he got a text and said to stop the game and we all got so mad . Then a few moments later when he got the rebound his phone fell out of his pocket and the glass broke . He got mad and walked to the bench and sat down . I looked at him and told him why didn’t u put your phone in Davids bookbag dumbfuck and he ignored me . We got bored of basketball and we went to hang out somewhere else and the whole time he was mad even tho he could still use it the glass was just shattered . I came to a realization that online addiction changes people
I hate parties. They’re so loud and usually very hot and hectic. Well most parties anyway. Why do I hate parties, you ask? The answer is pretty straightforward: I can’t dance and I can’t sing, and it’s awkward being around many people (many new faces)…
Last year, I got invited to a party, which was my first party in years. My friends were all excited and in a sort-of “it’s lit bro” attitude. I, on the other hand, was not. Moving along, we end up at this party, and it’s hot and awkward. Like I said, I can’t dance and I can’t sing, so I turned to my phone to make the ordeal less uncomfortable. Surfing the web, exchanging texts with friends, and social media was not only time killing, as I actually enjoyed it. In no time, I had made plans with other friends to link up and play basketball. In a sense, my so called internet addiction ruined the party for me, but I didn’t really care. I kind of hate parties, I had a great time on my phone…
I was the internet addict lol
Before I arrived to class on Wednesday, I took some time to observe certain people in the lunchroom. What I witnessed was pretty interesting. In the lunchroom there were about four people at a table playing on a flat screen TV without paying any mind to what’s going on around them. Scattered around the area were students in groups having conversations in person while others were on their phone, either texting or playing some sort of game. I could instantly notice which kids were internet addicts. The reason I was able to tell is because when I was in the watching the people they didn’t seem to notice me at all. I stood watching for about 10 minutes and not one person noticed. One thing they had in common was that they all seemed to be in their own world, either playing video games or texting friends on social media. The lunchroom is one of the busiest, loudest, most distracting places in the school. I couldn’t understand how some people were able to ignore what is around them and complete focus all their attention on their phone or game. Another interesting fact I noticed what that people are so addicted to their games that they not only bring their system to school but their TV as well.
I have a 5 year old little brother, and I believe that he is addicted to his tablet. I believe this because every night that he isn’t on his tablet he can’t fall asleep, so therefore he needs his tablet to fall asleep. He watches videos of other kids playing with toys, at first I thought that maybe he just can’t fall sleep in pure silence, that he needed some noise to fall asleep but when I would be on the phone or listening to music he would have a harder time falling asleep. This is almost every single night and I witnessed it from since he was around 3. Once he falls asleep I will take the tablet away and put it to charge. He rather watch videos and be on his tablet playing games over eating and homework. I’m finding a way to make being on his tablet a reward rather than a everyday thing.
Tuesdays class, one of our students disobeyed the rule of “no smart phones”. he was asked by the teacher to put down his phone. While almost cathartically swiping his home-screen back and forth his immediate response was a question “have i betrayed you guys or something?”. What he failed to notice was he was the only one blatantly on his phone. after some hesitation he reluctantly conceded his device. To me that was the most apparent display of internet addiction I have ever witnessed really.
My Best friend is just as bad as I am when it comes to the internet. Yesterday I went to pick her up from work and noticed that she was on her but I didn’t think anything of it. We went to go grab a bite to eat but she was still glued to her phone as we sat down and ate. I asked her how long was she on her phone that day and she told me she have been on all day. As we leave she notice that her phone is died and basically screams outside. After I saw her become more irritated with the people around her and constantly complaining about not having her phone. Thats when I realized that she is addicted to the internet just like i was maybe even more. So to help her cope with not having her phone I take us on a long walk on the way back home so she can keep her distracted and entertained by talking. I now see how internet addiction affects other people and not just myself.
Setting: home
Characters: myself
My first gaming console was the PlayStation 2. After that was the Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, and finally the PlayStation 4. My little sister always wanted her own gaming console. My mother never bought her one. Once I received my PlayStation 4, I gave my sister the previous console. Weeks passed by, if my sister played the ps3, it was because she had GTA v for the ps3. However, she always watched me play GTA v for the ps4. Usually when it’s time for me to go to work or anywhere else, she sneaks on my ps4 and plays on it up until I arrive home. She doesn’t try to hide it. I thought to myself how fortunate I was to be able to play the most recent video games as a kid when I was young, so I’ve decided to buy a second controller, solely for my little sister. She was so happy and I felt good even though PlayStation controllers weren’t cheap 2 years ago.
my friends usually have earbuds in their ears listening to music, while browsing their various social media pages while the whole squad is together. It bothers me, so I initiate a conversation by bringing up various topics to talk about to break them away from social media and technology for a while. These little observations make me think we are becoming addicted to the internet.
I always heard voices from the room next to my bedroom in middle of the night. Every night I have to scream at my brother for making the noise. He’s so addicted to the computer for almost every single minute. I have been witness him for over using the computer after his middle school. Everyday when I got home, I always saw him playing on the computer. It’s like a computer monster, he’s being poisoned by the computer either gaming or some what. Because of internet addiction, my brother has become a homebody and introvert. Every time when my parents ask him to go out to eat, he always asked for take out. Internet addiction really can change a person.

I characterize my friend as internet addicted, he never leaves his room and is always playing video games thinking he will make a living out of it. He dropped out of high school because of this, we barely hang out and the only time i talk to him is when i go online to play video games.
In my opinion he needs serious help, he is ruining his life because of this addiction and he should reconsider it.
My sister loves to watch Keeping Up with the Kardashians so here’s what I witnessed that made me think of internet addiction:
I’ve picked up on various scenes from The Kardashians that show internet addiction. Kourtney Kardashian (the oldest one I believe) is at her large living room relaxing on her couch and she is on her phone surfing the web. She has 3 children and they are playing at the living room and Kourtney pays little but no attention to them. Another scene that I saw was when they had a trip to the museum and all I saw was Kim recording every singe move she made on Snapchat. She wasn’t the only one that was doing this act, in fact her other sisters (Khloe and Kourtney) were on Snapchat too! I don’t hate the Kardashians, but just seeing them record every activity that they did at the museum and not even give their children or family any attention made me agitated.
There are people that i know that when its time t=for dinner they are very like uncomfortable or constantly fidgeting around if they cant have a look at their phones, just to quickly send a text back or even to just check on their notifications or the trends or shopping whatever it may be. And since we’re at the table eating with family, you’d be expected to be respectful and have convos with your friends or family member whoever you may be dining with, and that’s what makes me think of internet addiction, they way their behavior becomes so desperate and they give of this urge to have their phones in order to surf the web.
one perfect example would be last month when all my friends came back from college for thankgiving break, which was not that long. so I decided that we out go to the movies then go on a dinner date and they were all okay with it. once we got out of the house and in the car, you could hear a pin drop. Everyone was so quite so I just began to ask myself why? not knowing that everyone was just on their phones. either listening to music, texting the person next to them, Facebooking, or snap chatting. it was unbelievable because the whole night we weren’t even able to have a solid five minute conversation. that made me believe in the power of social media and its addictive ways. my friends later on s aid the date was fun. :/ What was fun about playing music and not being able to just talk with our mouths for once.
