In “We Can Remember it for You Wholesale,” the author, Philip K. Dick, tells a story where things aren’t always what they seem. The title itself, I feel already says a lot on what is suppose to or is gonna happen. Especially I’m highlighting the word “Remember” because at the end of this st0ry we find out that the main character, Douglass Quail, might not be having these false memory implants from Rekal Incorporated, like being in Mars, its like they could actually be real memories and he is remembering it all, as in his past. This twist makes us think about what’s true and what’s not.
Quail starts to remember more and more about his past, talking about how he was actually in Mars as well being a secret agent and assassin. He feels confused and scared because everything he thought he knew might be wrong. He decides to find out the truth, even if it’s hard. Along the way, he faces challenges and people who want to keep him from discovering what really happened. Finally, Quail reaches a point where Rekal Inc. remove the mars memory and swap it with another memory in which it was also became true, the memory implant was based on Quail’s early dream of meeting tiny aliens who had come to Earth to invade and colonize the planet, but who changed their minds after witnessing the boy Quail’s kindness to them.
I believe that It would be nice to see a story behind Quail’s memory about that past being unveiled at some point like all his memories connecting and making sense OR being all a lie still and all these memory wipes are all fake involving sooner or later the truth to be really told, like a whole plot twist. Obviously if he died then an alien invasion would happen too, so maybe it could happen but this time him going against the world, like kind of joining forces with the aliens, probably revenge? Since he would feel some type of way after all those memory wipes and knowing what’s real and what’s not.
Love how you were able to detail all the characters and retell the story, there’s also good characterization analysis here for Douglas and what he went through till the end so by the last paragraph in your own creation you was able to create a rhetorical scenario that punctuates the theme of memory in the character’s situation
