Our trip to Daily News headquarters in 4 New York Plaza was a learning experience for our field. Daily News was founded by Joseph Medill Patterson in 1919 and has been the 1st biggest circulating paper. In our trip we were able to understand more about the field and have a conference with the Creative design team of the paper. Paul, the Creative Director, as well as Jeffrey, Senior Designer, Michael, Part time Graphic Designer, Robert, Interaction Designer, Katrina, Part time Graphic Designer, and Jena, Leader Designer were part of the team.
As we walked inside the building was big and many people walked in and out, this gave me a sensation of what type of environment I would have to face when I find a job in the field. Walking out the elevators and into the floor my impressions grew bigger, there was a big size Daily News sign as well as their logo. Paul introduced us to the office and explained how the floor was separated. From Writers, to Editorial to the Design Team, everyone had their one section of the room with computers they were working on. We walked around and saw many if the most famous pages throughout the years of Daily News.
One of them that I was very intrigued was the one for August 15, 2003 about the blackout the city experienced. The page layout was very simple yet very catchy and cough my attention, separated into two sections; the top section had the skyline view of the city with something like a sun setting orange color. The bottom had some copy with a black background and big bold white san serif type.
In the conference room we talk about many topics in the field and one of them that I can consider it was my AHA moment was when they stated that no matter from what college you come from, but what matters is how good our portfolio is. For me that was very important because I had always had the question if companies look to see from what college someone had graduated from. One thing that I learned that I was not too sure about was about the programs companies use on the field. Paul and the others agreed that, it is okay if we are not familiar with programs used in the field because many companies use different programs and most of the time one ends up learning new programs in the job. However, we do need to have an understanding of basic fundamentals of design.
Another thing they talked to us about was UX and UI, I have heard this terminology before but I was not too sure what it really meant, yet after the conference I’m still somewhat confused on what it really means and I will be looking up more into. Do I see myself working in a company such as NY Daily News? I believe so, I am interesting on everyday news around the world or cities around us and it would be a challenge I will be willing to take.
