Week 1: Introduction and Education

Sept 3, w     Discussion of course, syllabus, and texts; HW for Mon: First: Orientation Scavenger Hunt Handout, Second: Journal 1 (200 word (typed) Summary of Course Policy–use Journal Template)

 

Week 2: Education and Intellectual Homes

Sept 8, m     Due: Journal 1. Discuss Scavenger Hunt Handout and Journal 1 and favorite/reading habits. Orientation–OpenLab; freewriting: in-class writing, read Asimov in class; HW for Wed: Read/print out Scibona and Brody; then write Journal 2: 300 word (typed) on favorite reading

Sept 10, w     Due: Journal 2. Freewrite; Essay 1 explained. Discuss readings; HW for Mon: read Gardner and Wallis/Steptoe essays in Dwell.

 

Week 3: Intellectual Home and New York

Sept 15, m     Discuss Intellectual Home. Freewrite. Discuss elements and essay format. HW for Wed: Read essays by Santiago and Rahmani; prep for Quiz 1

Sept 17, w    Due: Quiz 1–in class, over readings. Freewrite. Discuss revision and editing (quotations). HW for Mon: read Keller, Powell, and Lubrano.

 

Week 4: Sentences and Paragraphs

Sept 22, m    Due: Draft of Essay 1—peer review workshop. HW for Sept 29: revise, edit, and proof Essay 1.

Sept 24, w    NO CLASS

 

 Week 5: The Photo Essay

Sept 29, m     Due: Final Draft of Essay 1. Discuss how we read the city and see the city; What is a photograph? Barthes on Studium and Punctum; HW: Read Abbott, Hine, and Nooney-write Journal 3 (300 words via OpenLab)

Oct 1, w     Due: Journal 3. Discuss readings and the role of photography in culture; reality vs. image; HW: TBA

 

Week 6: Describing Photos

Oct 6, m       Discuss Essay 2: narrating physical and moral views (facts and feelings) of NYC; Discuss photos & readings. HW: read Sontag (or TBA) on OpenLab; Write Journal 4 via OpenLab

Oct 8, w      Journal 4 Due; discuss readings; revision techniques and quotations. HW: Study for Quiz 2 (reading and summary)

 

Week 7: Writing a Comparison Essay

Oct 15, w    Quiz 2; Freewrite. Discuss ways of seeing and narrating the city; Taking Photos—how to; HW: read José Parlá in Dwell

 

Week 8: Writing a Comparison Essay

Oct 20, m      Review for Midterm Exam (critical reading, summary, and citations); Taking Photos—how to; Discuss Parla; Describing the city and art. HW: read Joseph Anastasio

Week 9: Structure: Revision and Techniques of Good Writing

Dec 1, m    Due: Annotated Bibliography for Peer Review. Question & answer concerning Essay 3; HW for Wed: Write and revise Essay 3

Dec 3, w   Due: Draft of Essay 3 (Annotated Bib + Essay–at least 2 pages) Due in class
