Summary of “The Brooklyn Bridge” Page 245

On page 245 Phillip Lopate author of “The Brooklyn Bridge” started by mentioning the raw profile of the bridge. Lopate discusses the principle beauty of the bridge by describing in detail why he thinks Brooklyn Bridge is “handsome”. An example of Lopate description of the bridge comes when he talks about the elegance of the cables that curve downward across the bridge. Also Lopate mentions how the cables have also been compared to the likes of ” a harp, a spiders web, and angel wings”. Later in the page Lopate goes onto describe the historical style that was used to construct the bridge. This is the summary of page 245.

Reading “The Brooklyn Bridge” by Phillip Lopate

In your groups, work together to be able to write your own summary of the page you were assigned. To do this work, your group should:

  1. identify words you don’t know or words your classmates might not know to add to our glossary. You will need to define these words to complete this assignment, but you might divide the list among your groupmates.
  2. identify what in the page stands out to you. Write about it.
  3. identify research that Lopate has done, resources he refers to. Think about how you will incorporate research into your writing, and think about how Lopate’s writing can be a model for you.

Before our next class, write a comment here that 4. summarizes your group’s page. You will need to read the whole essay to complete this, and to know the meanings of the words you identify in class. In your summary, be sure to identify your assigned page number.

Brooklyn Bridge Readings

The two readings “The Brooklyn Bridge” by Phillip Lopate and the prologue section of the book “Brooklyn Bridge: Fact and Symbol” by Alan Trachtenberg have such similar words and sentence yet they are so different from one another, they each have their own way of depicting the Brooklyn Bridge and her glory.

Lopate uses history in his writing, he tries to convey to the audience the experience before the bridge itself, the hardship and the turmoil that presented itself as the bridge was being build.  Lopate basically stated its foundation and reason why it exists.  He later went on to state and prove that the bridge is more then  just a bridge to many.  It can be the obvious, a method of transportation but also a romantic place or a place to get away from our everyday troubles.  The beauty that the bridge withholds and also the beauty of the view, it makes us wonder, as the audience, why haven’t we seen this before last time we were there.  In a way it intrigues readers to visit the place with this point a view that Lopate has installed in his words.  He as well uses fun facts about the bridge, its history on how over twenty workers had fatal accidents over the course of her construction.  The fact that the creator of the bridge died before it was even consulted with everyone. Later his son would take over but he as well died before the project was finished so his wife finished the project and it became the Brooklyn Bridge.  A well celebrated monument that still stands today.

On the other hand, Trachtenberg just describes the Brooklyn Bridge in the prologue of his book.  He uses imagery to convey to his audience everything that is around the bridge itself as you walk across it.  The benches, the promenade, the balcony, the view down to the traffic or the bay or even lady Liberty herself on the skyline.  This section gives us a witness account to the bridge as someone crosses it, very well detailed but with an insight that we all deserve instead of wondering why the cables are there? what is the purpose of this? etc.

“Brooklyn Bridge fact and symbol” by Alan Trachtenberg, talks to us about the Brookyln Bridge in a very illustrative language. While reading this I felt as I was walking towards the Brooklyn Bridge. As we keep reading he describes how it is to walk on the bridge. He uses a very rich vocabulary to make you feel and hear what’s around you, for example when he said “one can lean over re railing and watch cars speeding below”. Also he tries to argue that this isn’t your normal traffic bridge and has a lot of several ways you can view Brooklyn through it.

Wednesday session

On our Wednesday session for english we had a double period session for english since professor davis was out. In the first half we talked about Reading Lucy. we talked about details that we found very interesting. How Lucy wrote letter. we payed attention the role of women during world war 2 and we also realized that the area in which lucy worked was right near us. The brooklyn navy yard is well known by everyone because it was a mass producer of warships during world war 2. We also talked about how technology affects the story. in one part the reader goes to the internet to search about lucy and in a second she knew everything about the story of Lucys life. In a second the whole mood and the suspense was demolished because she found out Lucys future. the whole time she was living in the moment with Lucy. She was living her life story and her love story. she learned everything about them through her letters. she then continued to read and learned a lot more about her. she then started to compare Lucy’s life to her own. they were both strong and hard working. her personality resembled greatly with Lucy’s. In our next session we went to a computer lab. this is where we researched our topic for our essay and our speech video. we mapped all the topics and made groups so we can go together and take a video as a group. im looking forward to going to the navy yard because it intrigues me greatly.

The Brooklyn Bridge, hw post 11/1,

In his essay, “The Brooklyn Bridge”, Phillip Lopate depicts the Brooklyn Bridge as lovable. Through out Lopate’s essay he gives reasons to why the bridge is lovable and why it has remained lovable through out it’s Lifespan. Along with each reason he states, Lopate pulls a quote and inputs the resource that he used come up with each reason. You can tell that he extensively researched the Brooklyn Bridge by the way he incorporated his research through out the essay and carefully picked examples he choose to put into his essay. He used  vast amount of resources, such as poems, pictures, songs, books, articles and journals, to research the Brooklyn Bridge. In the two photos ,Lopate choose to incorporate in the essay, the Brooklyn Bridge is photographed from the Brooklyn side and each photo illustrates the Bridge’s architectural beauty. The photos give the reader a better understanding of Lopate’s depiction of the Brooklyn Bridge and adds to his analysis that the Bridge deserves to be a Monument.

On our Wednesday class we had a double period of English. The first period was spent talking about the reading “Reading Lucy” and how we feel about it and had a class discussion. After that we went upstairs to a computer lab, where Professor Rosen pulled up a map and we all got to plot out our areas on the map. This helped me see where it is located and how far it is from our campus. We also learned alot of important and resourceful tips and search engines to help us with our essays. I really found this class helpful and interesting since I got to see my area and websites that I can use to help me as well.

Reflection on computer session

In our  Wednesday session of Eng 1101 we had a double period which consisted of finishing our reading of “Reading Lucy” as well as a visit to a computer lab.  In our computer lab visit Professor Rosen began by having each student introduce the area which they have chosen to do there essay upon and also there reason for choosing that specific location. For those who have not chosen a location this was the time for them to do that. Furthermore fro those who did not formulate there thesis Professor Rosen had them work on there thesis. Along with this we used our computers to open up Openlab from which we opened a link to a map. The purpose of the map was to show the areas that the students had chosen for there essays and Professor Rosen plotted them on the smart board which displayed the map. Also i believe an underlying purpose of the map was to show the areas where many students took interest. Following this we went onto begin our in class research for the locations we chose for our essays. We revisited our college library’s website to review how to use the various search engines that provide credible sources.  I used the EBSCO search engine to find any sources that provide info as to the history of Brooklyn Borough Hall. I found some very compelling articles related to the location i choose which was Brooklyn Borough Hall.

Computer Session 11/14

On Wednesday, NOvember 14th we had a double session of English.  First we finished reading “Reading Lucy” by Jennifer Egan in class.  In the second class hour we went to a computer room and we mapped our research places.  I found this session very helpful and interesting.  The class pinpointed out the places they wish to reseach, which was mostly the Nacy Yard and a few others around City Tech.  I picked the Brooklyn Bridge to reseach because i haven’t been there since a grade field trip to it, many many years ago. I dont remember much but i know it was a longg walk for my short legs.  Professor Rosen had us look through databases and try to start our research project.  I actually found out that we are part of Long Island.  I was really shocked. I feel kind of silly not knowing this earlier since i have been living in Brooklyn my whole life but i guess that is the point of a reseach project.  I also found a really cool website that has a webcam of the Brooklyn Bridge, live!

Looking at the map projected on the smartboard made me think how close our history really is to us and the advantage we have in learning everything about our hometown.  I think i will have a good time researching this project. especially with the databases that City Tech offers us, which is techinically free and very useful.

Although I still don’t know what my research question is going to be, i went on EBSCO (Academic Search Complete) and found a few articles that gave me interesting facts and history about the Brooklyn Bridge.  This useful source might just help me figure our my thesis statement for my research essay/assignment.
