the kinds of things we do when we take notes:
- underline
- highlight
- star
- draw an arrow
- add a comment in the margin
- circle
- write over the text to make it bold
- question mark for something that doesn’t yet make sense–then return to it
- write important facts–dates, names that are capitalized
- make an outline on a separate sheet of paper (reading notebook)
- underline quotations and numbers
- use post-it notes when you can’t write in the book
- write abbreviated version of what’s in the text
- define words you don’t know
- ask questions to yourself to help you think about what you might want to write about in your paper
- ask questions of the author
- ask questions that you want to bring up in class
- paraphrase important sentences in the margin
- margin notes for outside information
- summarize paragraphs or parts of paragraphs in the margin
