Reading an image

To read a photograph, we want to consider what we can see:

  • what it depicts
  • time/era it was taken
  • location/setting
  • season/time of day
  • photograph/image quality
  • message the picture is telling
  • kind of photograph/technique
  • symbols that might be in the photograph
  • landmarks/attractions
  • facial expressions
  • body language
  • what’s in the background
  • gender
  • race
  • socioeconomic class
  • quality of life
  • age
  • event/holiday/occasion
  • relationship between/among people depicted, or people and their surroundings
  • colors
  • shading
  • textures
  • focus
  • clothing
  • mood
  • camera and other equipment
  • recreation or original
  • context clues, eg, technology
  • language/words included
  • photographer
  • is it posed or candid?

make inferences

message or meaning

what story does it tell?

how do we know details such as time/place?

we don’t want to jump to conclusions

can we summarize it?
