Hello fellow classmates, hope you’re enjoying your labor day weekend. I will be summarizing Professor Davis’s class for you.
So class started at 11:30, hopefully everyone was on time. We started off by Prof. Davis collecting our first class assignment which included us to do pages 3,5, and 9 in our textbook and bring them in, we also had to read Chapters 1 & 2. Since it was the first week, he gave a little lead way and whoever didn’t bring it in has until our next class on September 5th to bring it in. He also stated that this would be the only time he would extend the deadline for an assignment so make sure you always bring them in ON TIME.
In class, we talked about different kinds of communication and how public speaking differs from other communication. We started off with preparation, formal and communication rules. From there, he gave us 5 categories, Intentional to meet a goal, Impromptu, reading from a manuscript, memory, and Extemporaneous. We also talked about speech anxiety which is also called communication apprehension. He gave us tips on how to get over this and how to turn it into something positive.
We also learned the idea of an conversation. With this we were given an acronym, SMCR. It stands for Source, Message, Channel, Receiver. he gave us an example through texting, in which he states we are the source, we send the message, it goes through the phone and the receiver sees it and replies which repeats the cycle all over again. This is called the transitional model.
Everything we’ve learned is covered in Chapters 1 & 2 in the textbook. See you guys next week and DON’T FORGET TO BRING PG. 11 to class.
