Wednesday, August 29, 2012 Class Summary

Hello Classmates ^_^

On Wednesday, August 29, 2012, we discussed the class syllabus in great detail as to truly give ourselves a grasp upon what is expected of us in the coming semester. We seperated into groups of four and each group was given a certain section of the syllabus that we explained in depth to the class. This excercise not only allowed us to gain a grasp of the professor’s expectation, but also allowed us to get to know the members of our individual groups. We first went over English Compostion 1 (the course we are taking) and what it entails, which are things like learning to effectively read and write on a college level. We then  went over things like Participation, Attendance, The Openlab website, course assignments, etc. Attendance is pivital to your excelling this course and not just physically as one might assume. Professor Rosen also requires your mental attendance, expecting us to come to class well aware of the material we will be covering beforhand  and prepared to discuss it during class. You will be allowed a maximum of 3 excused or unexcused absences a semester, after which you will automatically recieve a WU grade, which is a failing grade averaged into your GPA. (Not good at all o_o) We covered what we will primarily be doing in class, which you may have guessed is writing. We will be writing in class, outside of class, and on the openlab site, so be prepared to write a lot. A whole lot. We discussed our assignments and how we can revise them and give them back in to slightly boost our grade. We also went over the essays that we will do over the semester and how they factor in the be a big part of our grade, together with class participation and our involvement on the Openlab platform. We discussed Academic Integrity, which in a nutshell is a strong staple against cheating and more importantly plagiarism. Going against the Academic Integrity policies instructed by the class and the College by default can lead to severe penalties including but not limited to immediate failure of a course!

We then went into assignments like this, a summary of the seesion of class for a certain day and the glossary assignment that must be done before each assigned class. A handout was given detailing these assignments in detail and can be recieved from Professor Rosen.

Lastly, we started on our first essay, which is primarily about you as a person. It asks of you to write about your philosophy on life, your passion, and where you see yourself in ten years. We used the remaining class time to begin our essay but not quite BEGIN it yet, just allowing Professor Rosen and insight on us as writers and where we are going exaclty with our writing.

So that was class in a nutshell. To recieve a full in-depth clarification of what is due from us as students, class assignments, or the Openlab site,  look towards your syllabus or refer to Professor Rosen for more details.

Extra!! Please read for clarification on City Tech’s Academic Integrity policies. Very important read, as I am quite sure none of us want to slave over an entire semester just to fail for not adhering to these policies.
