Mentor Tasks-Rehana

Once upon a time, I had this friend in middle school and it was a nightmare! I was in the 6th grade and it was the first day of school, I was nervous to meet new people and make new friends. but I came across a girl who seemed genuinely wonderful. we talked about our lives like what have we done in the past and what we plan to do in the future. we also talked about what we have in common with each other. When we had classes together and hung out at lunch, sometimes even outside we would always make each other laugh. but as time went by even years I started to notice some odd behavior from her. she would always constantly talk bad about me and bring me down or when someone compliant me she would often disagree with them. At first, I thought she was just joking because we were friends but it got serious. she will say stuff like “You will never get anywhere in life or your nothing without me or I’m better than you at this”. It’d started to bother me and I didn’t know what I wanted to be in the future.

She would always compete with me and compare me to other people as well. From that quote, I was lacking self-confidence, I didn’t do well in school, I would always fail a test, I couldn’t talk to people well and I didn’t eat well. After we graduated from middle school I cut ties with her during the summer. after I completely cut ties with her I realized that I was following the wrong crowd and that my old friend was just an angry person that had suffered a past trauma. and eventually, I turned all that around and I was heading in the right direction of my life by having hanging out with good people and staying in my own lane. I’m very optimistic about the future now.

Malcolm X-Rehana

After reading about Malcolm X”s “Saved” chapter 11, Malcolm X talks about his struggles on how he couldn’t read or write and how his grammar and spelling were very abysmal and he felt bad about it. especially writing a letter to Mr. Muhammad. Another thing that Malcolm X talked about was praying. In his story, there is a quote that says” Praying is the hardest test he ever faced in his life. This quote means that praying was intensely challenging and difficult for him to do but he needed to do it so he can prove something about himself. Another quote in his story says “Mr. Muhammed sent me a typed reply. It had an all but electrical effect upon me to see the signature of the “Messenger of Allah” This quote means that it wasn’t handwritten but typed and it was typed beforehand because he doesn’t read all of the letters he gets. Malcolm refers to Elijah as the “Messenger of Allah”.

Prison studies is a story about Malcolm being in prison for six and a half years and in those six years he couldn’t read or write. There is a quote in his story that says ” Where else but in prison could I have attacked my ignorance by being able to study intensely sometimes as much as fifteen hours a day.” This quote means that he has literature & freedom that he will now be able to do well in the outside world. Malcolm taught himself how to read by copying words off of a dictionary book that he doesn’t know & reading them aloud and also reading his handwriting too.

Resilience-Rehana

After reading Anne of green gables which is one of my favorite book, it has taught me to learn how to love yourself which I think it’s the greatest lesson of all. learning and appreciating about your self-identity is very important because it can lead to greater happiness in your life. Another thing that helped me in life is watching my favorite childhood movie called Matilda. It has taught me that “you are not alone” and that quote is very important because every human are different but that makes us unique. We might have different problems we go through and how we solve each others problems. Some of us have different hobbies and different dreams of the future and how we want it to turn out.

I was bullied a lot in my childhood and all the bullying made me have a lot of anxiety & depression and not know what I want to be in the future. and then I started to become very shy. I was very addicted to being on the computer and being on my phone a lot throughout my life. I’d focused too much on social media which made me feel bad about myself focusing on other people. and I was very oblivious. I would always stay up all night too. But I turned all that around by reading so many books and watching inspirational movies, I took a break off of social media, and I became less shy. I started to have better social interaction with people and I’m starting to become very optimistic about the future.

Frederick Douglass-Rehana

Part 1

On paragraph 3, Why Douglass so interested in figuring out what abolition? and how did learning to read inspire Douglass to make a change? and How does Douglass learn about abolition? and why doesn’t he take the advice from the Irishmen?

After hearing and learning the word abolition, he was happy to become a reader and that slaves were getting their freedom even though it was a very horrendous time period. and the reason why reading inspired Douglass to make a change was that he read about freedom which led him to escape slavery. he learns about abolition by reading about it in a city paper. subsequently, Douglass was making a wonderful speech to fight against slavery. Douglass ignores the Irishmen advice is because he was afraid that they were going to betray him.

Part 2

On paragraph 1, What does Douglass’s mistress means when she says ” she seemed to think that here lay the danger”? and Who was the first person to help Douglass learn how to read? and Why does Douglass say that learning to read was a curse rather than a blessing?

I believe his mistress was saying that if the slaves know how to read or write they would understand how their lives should change and that they can make freedom papers. and The first person who help Douglass learn how to read was the wife of master Hugh. and Lastly after learning how to read Douglass realized that it showed his horrible situation that he did not learn how to escape slavery.

Introduction-Rehana

Hello, Everyone! My name is Rehana Parvin. I’m 19 years old. I grew up in Brooklyn, but my parents are originally from Bangladesh. This is currently my 3rd year semester at City Tech and I’m majoring in Liberal Arts because I want to be able to communicate well with other people. I have three siblings. One older sister, an older brother, and a little brother. One of my hobbies includes Magic Tricks, Martial Arts (such as karate), and Arts (that includes painting & drawing). I also like listening to music which is K-pop and J-pop and I love watching horror movies. I’m interested in traveling to different countries and learning new languages. I want to learn how to play an instrument which includes playing the acoustic guitar & piano.  My reasoning for being at City Tech is to have a better future in life. Growing up I had a hard time Reading & Writing because of my dyslexia, but then I started reading above my grade level which helped me so much. Throughout my childhood, I was a very shy person. I also have difficulty socializing with people.

After college, I plan on going to a Martial Art school so that I can learn self-defense and try some cool moves. Hopefully this year I get to have a wonderful time at City Tech and have a better social interaction. There’s really not much to know about me, so yeah I’m a very boring person. (Sorry you guys) and to be honest I don’t know what I wanna be when I grow up, even though I love Art so much! I look forward to being with you guys throughout this semester!
