Elegy

The definition of elegy is a mournful, contemplative lyric poem written to commemorate someone who is dead, often ending in a consolation. Elegy may also refer to serious meditative poem produced to express the speaker’s melancholy thoughts. The poem “Elegy for my Father, who is not dead” by Andrew Hudgins is a very interesting poem. The poem is about elegy, however it is unusual for an elegy because the father is NOT yet dead but is already embracing death.

The poem is a separated contrast between the father’s positive view of death and the speakers’ depressed and scared perspective of it. The father’s embrace of death pushes the speaker to feel he is already dead and adds to his depression by making him feel isolated from is father. Overall, i must recommend that you read this poem. It express the meaning of elegy in different ways.
