A Discourse Community is a type of group where people who have the same beliefs, passions or ideas. Discourse Communities is a way to socialize your ideas and passions to other people who share the same beliefs and ideas as you. I can name several discourse communities but we are only going to talk about the ones we know most about. When it comes to myself as a person the two communities I mainly belong to are the Communications Design Community and the Photography Community.
When it comes to the Communications Design as a discourse community, it’s an environment where people share their ideas of forms of art such as graphic design, illustration, etc. I have been working and putting my focus on communications design since my Freshman Year In High School where you learn how to Design softwares and pass certifications in order to graduate and get your diploma. My goal is to work in the Communications Design field as a Career and technical High School Teacher where I teach students about Communications design and how to use the design softwares, and allow the students to follow the same process I had when I was in High School. Communication design is also a community where people can socialize to each other not just about design but also about other things whether it’s hobbies or likes. When I’m in the communications design department I always feel safe because it’s the place I’m always in and my friends are always there for me when I need them. Being in Communications design isn’t just a place for design but more of a community where we can all belong.
Something that always stood out to me as a person and makes me different is what a lot of people call/ point out, that being “making photography as my personality.” I will have to admit they aren’t wrong. Like really. They are not Wrong. Photography has been a staple in my family’s house, and we are only allowed to use Nikon Cameras. My Dad did wedding photography while I did sports photography and modeling photography. But it wasn’t like that back then.
When it came to photography I didn’t stumble upon the term until my Junior Year in High School. At first I founded the photography club with a multimedia teacher that I befriended, yet I didn’t know what to even do for photography. It wasn’t until half a year later when I broke up with my Ex-Girlfriend and I was not in a good state, so I went to the club teacher who I always vented to and I ask him what I can do to get over a bad relationship, he went into his closet and took out a camera and hand it to me, at first I wasn’t fond of the camera but when I used the camera and took a picture of a sunset, my whole thought of photography and my attitude changed. I didn’t think about anything but my thoughts meditating. I took a deep breath and went home knowing there’s nothing on my mind anymore. Ever since then Photography was something I did almost everyday and practiced on. Ever since that day I worked my way up the rankings of photographers and became one of the top 10 photographers in NY state as a High School Student. And became a Sports photographer while also doing model photography. When it comes to photography as a discourse community it’s a society or group where people usually talk about photography while showing and sharing their own work and pieces. In my friend group a lot of people really like photography and usually talk about what pictures we take, and what we can improve on. I think when it comes to my photography club in high school it’s a discourse community that made me feel like I belonged in it because it was a community that all my friends in high school belonged in and when you have the same interests, it’s not hard to join and fit in.
Looking back at what brought me to these discourse communities the process was really hard, Extremely Hard. I think the main thing you need is to take criticism and have a lot of confidence to be in the Graphic Design and Photography Community. Because when you do something there are always going to be people giving you ideas about how to improve something either on a picture or a design project. You need to listen and understand, because if you don’t you can think of it as criticism and it can affect you being confident or you just take it personally. In the end discourse Communities are a way for us to be involved with the topics we focus on today, and be in a community where you feel like you belong in.
