My topic is how having sports teams in City Tech can help improve the socializing of students because of how many students at City Tech are very quiet and anti social but all share similar interests in sports whether its basketball, football, baseball, soccer etc. I believe personally sports teams can help take some stress off of students because how of difficult the grind of getting through a semester can be for students as well as it also allows students to showcase some talent as well as even socially it allows them to get to know one another building a friendship. From my experience at City Tech when it comes to socializing as well as stress built from with in a semester, students can in a way feel unmotivated from the work whiles searching for a way to keep themselves motivated and I believe one great way of doing that is having peers by your side to help you stay focused as well as doing activities to take your mind off of college for a second which helps release some of that stress. I’ve definitely noticed how in college students tend to go their own ways meaning none to very little communication with one another even if they see each other in class which is why I think bringing them along sharing a hobby like sports makes it not only socializing but also can be fun.
In this article “Benefits of sports for students” by Mindgroom, it breaks down the physical, mental, social, academic and emotional benefits of being on a sports team. It supports my thesis statement on sports clubs can help improve students social skills whiles also relaxing students of stress by stating “Being part of a team helps students develop essential social skills like communication, cooperation, and empathy” for social benefits whiles also stating “Engaging in sports provides an outlet for stress and frustration, promoting emotional stability and resilience.” for emotional benefits”. One thing that I found interesting that supports my thesis whiles reading this article was that this article states “Contrary to the belief that sports may detract from academic pursuits, research shows that physically active students often perform better academically. Regular exercise improves concentration and energy levels, enabling students to engage more actively in their studies” meaning students tends to perform better in class knowing their are certain requirements they must fulfill in order to stay in the club or team such as GPA requirements or good behavior and a good skill needed to fulfill those requirements would be the help of one another in classes. Another thing I learned from this article was academically sports team can also help students manage time as well as staying on track with a schedule, something all college kids can benefit from in order not to fall behind.
One counter argument that I can see be made about sports teams not being a good idea is that kids in college tend not to have the spare time on their hands to join a team because of how college work can pile up as well as kids also having a life outside of school such as working a job or taking care of their families. While I can see that being a valid counterpoint, it also in a way helps supports my thesis because of how work and taking care of your family can also add to that stress as well as making it even harder to socialize with others since your minds already in other places.
With that being said I personally believe that sports clubs are a good thing to have in college, especially at City Tech which could help students socialize with one another as well as helping them take stress off of themselves.
