One of our texts for this week is “What is Code Switching?” by Lisa Beasley. It’s probably not an unfamiliar concept to most of us. Beasley explains it for her viewer in about two minutes. It’s a concept at play in Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” among other texts we’ll read this semester.
In a comment below, share a link to another resource (video, blog post, dictionary definition, etc) about code switching (or, if you want, about discourse communities). Some say that the term, the concept itself, is racist–so if that’s interesting to you to find out, please pursue that avenue. Then write a short explanation of what the resource you found offers us in our pursuit to understand code switching and what it has to do with discourse communities.
PS–When I watched Beasley’s video, the next several that auto-loaded were really good, too, so you might not have far to look!
PPS–but please don’t choose the same resource as someone else if you can help it!

Talks about how the speaker, Benjamin Abiola, experiences code switching. He switches in a few different scenarios like when he’s with his sister in London he switches to a British accent or when he talks to his mom he speaks in his African language.

This is a YouTube video by “let’s study social science.” It’s just 3 to 4 mins long let’s say. It’s helpful because it broken down code switching even further than any other video. If anyone watch the video they will hear that theirs 3 type of code switching within code switching. It’s was helpful for me to see that’s theirs many way of code switching. Ivy, Elijah, Samuel. I feel like it connects to discourse community because many people do code switching everyday without even noticing it.
