Discussion: DC words

In class, we’ve read several texts (including videos) that we can use to think about discourse communities.

We’ve also started a semester-long glossary project, in which we will spend more time thinking carefully about words.

In a comment, choose a word that’s used in a discourse community you’re a part of and explain why you feel it is a good example of a part of your discourse community’s vocabulary, or lexis.

Spend some time thinking and writing about this word in your discourse community because it should become part of your Project 1 narrative.

A word, or perhaps action, in my discourse community that is significant is “voguing”. Regardless of the style, voguing shows the courage of black and Latino LGBTQ communities to make an art form that goes beyond creative expression. Vogue offers a sense of identity, belonging and dignity in a world that does not fully value their lives. The history goes very far back, its extremely empowering watching movies such as “Paris is Burning”, shows like “Pose”, and songs that reference like Madonna’s “Vogue”; that fabricated the popularity of voguing, and bought it from underground to mainstream.
