Unit Descriptions and Dates (subject to change by Professor):
UNIT ONE: (1/31-3/1)What is health psychology? How can we think about our own identities when it comes to health and illness? What are the differences between people (real and fake) and how are they used to explain varied health outcomes? How can we think about health care? How do things like futurelessness and community self-determination influence health?
UNIT TWO: (3/7-4/5) What makes us perceive situations as stressful? What is good stress? How does our body respond to stress? How do we think and feel in the presence of stress (coping)? How do scientists approach these types of questions? What are the online databases available to me to read primary research articles? What are the stories we learn and tell about race in the U.S.? How can we start/change the conversation about wellness on our campus?
UNIT THREE: (4/19-5/17) What is the leading cause of death in the United States (for both men and women)? How do our beliefs shape our intentions and subsequent health behaviors? What is the experience of health among those new to the United States? How can we approach research on these topics more critically? How can we capture social complexities such as race and gender in health research? What social policies from our country’s past have shaped the health disparities still present today? How can I apply all of this to my own experiences with health and decision making? How am I going to spread this to my community (both CityTech and at-large)?
