Reflection #2 Sean

In the start of 2020 a new virus called coronavirus with unknown origin started in Wuhan China which then in the last months since it started it the virus is now considered a pandemic spreading the virus everywhere throughout worldwide. This resulted in unemployment rising which causes the stock market to crash and schools being shut down which includes us college students as we are now enrolled in a new teaching method called online classes to which in my opinion are the first time doing online classes from home to which I’m not used to. This way it prevents further virus spreading through social distance and proper hygiene but leads to become once known busy streets or attractions to become a ghost town and also to lead to massive amount of people to  buy and hoard the really good items such as rice, toilet paper, and hand sanitizers as well with face masks. Though there are news that shows how deadly the virus is showing how Italy has the highest deaths coming from the virus but in some cases young people seem to not care shown in some articles of young people getting it shows that “us” young people are not immune to this virus and that getting it would cause a lot of illness. It said that a vaccine is in the making on how to make it, test it on people, and to get FDA approval shows that the virus is going to take a long time for the vaccine to be approved for mass production. For now in this case all we can do is prevent further infecting other people, cleaning ourselves the best we can and if you do need to go outside only use a face mask to those who are coughing around you as well as wearing gloves. Remember to wash your hands if you can and don’t touch anywhere on your face.

reflection Hannah Jones

After reading “The Idea of America.Intro to 1619 project” by Hannah Jones along with two articles called “Fact-Checking the 1619 Project and its Critics” by Magness and “After All, Didn’t America Invent Slavery” by Lindsay I found some new facts about slavery. These facts were new to me on how slavery happened during the Mesopotamia era where enemies captured people from conquering countries to be kept as slaves which according to Lindsay’s article stated it took place 6800 B.C way before 1619 the year where African Americans came to america to be slaves that worked in the field. This shows that slavery has been throughout history and that there were more cases of slavery that happened that were different from U.S history of African slavery. The topic from these articles showcase how throughout history how slavery was a part of us to show the importance of learning history itself even though we focus on U.S history. I do believe there is a discourse course community that does talk about this kind of subject of slavery would be and how there are activists back in the day when African Americans were free but were discriminated even so to this day there are activist out there fighting for a equal cause. There are movements that are fighting for equality that African american want to have to be equal in this country.

To me, I believe that the U.S really has no racism in its DNA because of how immigrants are building this country. Even though that the history makes us believe that slavery was a bad part of history that played part against basic human rights but they did however contribute to making the country become better which brings us Jones’ project 1619 on how African slaves contributed a lot for this country on building the richest nations we know of today

and without Africans slavery the United states as we know won’t exist. My role here is to be a citizen that goes to school to get a degree in physical therapy then hopefully find a job so I can make money while helping people which I can contribute to the great society I live in like how the slaves contribute and help build it up. Even though the U.S has no racist in its DNA there are racist people out there that degrade people based on their skin color or other stereotypes that they say in order to degrade us as human beings but I’m not racist so in a way I try to avoid those types of people the best I can.

Do I think of myself as an american? Though I was born here in the United States but i do consider myself as an american because to me being an american is how you contribute yourself to society same how the slaves from Jones “Idea of america” contributed to building the nation where we live today the idea of how people that work everyday to provide both there family as well as the nation they live the mere labor we work for and the people that also fought for this country is this nation is building itself over and over again.  But though she did disagree with is how when the declaration of independence was signed making this statement “all men are created equal” though African men are forced into slavery making them ranking the lowest of the low. To me being american is how we contribute to the nation we live despite being different.

Reflection #2 Chapter 4-6

In the chapter Aurora introduces a new character named Aurora who is a drug addict who has landed herself in a detention center who was on and off relationships with Yunior who is technically now a teenager around 15 years old living in an area that is basically a bad neighborhood where drugs are being traded at and hanging around with bad friends that influences you the bad way such as his friend Cut who he and Yunior to get high on drugs. Through these harsh times Yunior is going to be able to help Aurora to get her clean.

In the chapter Aguantando sets back when Yunior was 9 years old in the Dominican Republic of how the first chapter started out but this chapter is now experience living there lives since Yunior’s father was absent since he went to the United States to find wealth and someday bring his family over to the United but hasn’t returned to bring them leaving  their mother had to work long hours with barely any pay and since then Yunior’s family has been living off very poor in the Dominican Republic hoping for their father to return and bring them to the United States.

The story has short stories that summarizes Yunior’s life as seen in the chapter Drown shows Yunior as a high school student. In this chapter Yunior is mostly seen with his friend Beto who went to the same high school as Yunior and tries to hangout with Yunior before Beto goes to college at which he is a first year majoring in Business. As they are hanging out they recall the days how they shoplift various stores in the mall and that they often jump the fence to have a little swim in the pool. As stated this is a friend who was mostly in criminal activities that influences Yunior to use drugs since his father was absent from most of his life as he was now in Florida with another woman. Later on Yunior and Beto started to develop feelings of sexuality meaning they have fallen with each other in terms coming out of the closet and yet again had these same feelings while Beto and Yunior were watching porn. Once Beto left for college the chapter ends with Yunior watching a movie with his mother.

After reading the chapters it has a message that reflects on to me based on reading these chapters. In Aurora I reflect on how I must do anything to get a crush to fall for me even though that Yunior is trying to do anything to keep his love for Aurora together even though they have a bad relationship sorta how i wanted a girl to love for me even though it was a relationship but to try hard on doing what you got to do when it comes to love.  In the chapter Aguantando it reflected on me on how during most of my childhood my parents had to work long hours which I was cared for at my grandparents house during the time sorta reflects how Yunior’s mother was working long hours to provide for her family knows what it was like remember how I spent during my childhood years. How I reflect in chapter Drown would most likely be apart of how feelings towards one friend to another could be confusing or to me something worried on whether they have the same feeling towards you sorta but opposite since Yunior is considered “gay” in this particular scene in this chapter. Overall as the story progresses I would reflect on Yunior’s life towards mine as well to know what it was remember my life.
