I am Rachel (or Raye). I go by she/they but they are preferred. I am a math education major, and I also minor in physics. I have been tutoring small humans since I was in High School, and would always get stuck tutoring mathematics/earth science and physics. So the passion stuck and now I am turning a menial job into a career(also if I end up teaching Physics I have an excuse to reference Star Trek and Marvel in my lessons). I am an avid outdoorswoman. I love hiking, foraging, and survival. I also taught survival skills such as building shelters and how to start a fire pit as an outdoor education counselor at my local 4H camp. As you can see, I have a loyal hiking partner named Ginger. I plan on taking advantage of New York’s reciprocity with New Jersey and return back to my home state (possibly my alum district). If teaching doesn’t turn out to be my thing, I hope to find a job in the research labs of either the US Army or the Airforce.

Ginger!!!! What a beauty!
Your outdoor activities sound super cool. I think that facing physical challenges can help prepare a person for facing mental challenges (like, um, understanding math) as well. You build skills like problem solving, creativity, persistence, and so on, which are super important in both realms!
I have done many “critical thinking” based building activities. These kids amaze me with their creativity and team-building skills. These experiences are what I strive to bring into the classroom (it is shocking just how many parallels there are between a group of kids at camp, and being a teacher in a classroom). I also worked many years at day camps, and my favorite group of kids was this group that built a structure out of marshmallows and spaghetti. https://photos.google.com/search/2017/photo/AF1QipMzJp1yfYigv–hl9pOx3BTljF_qjW6j6L_vp8U
Rachel, your cat is so cute!
I also like things related to survival in the wild. I often watch documentaries about survival in the wild. I think that in the wild, I can find a stronger self and see what I want more clearly.
