Group 3 Test #2 review practice – minutes

Attendance: Pablo, Ines, Imane (group 4) and Katie

Presentations: Ines and Katie both presented Standard 9, while Pablo and Imane presented Standard 10.

I. Imane’s presentation was clear and thorough. Katie hadn’t started on area yet, but was able to understand exactly what was going on!

II. Pablo presented his version of Standard 10 in real time! He explained everything so well as he drew it out. We were all impressed.

III. Ines is also a great presenter and answered a few of our questions patiently and in a way we could understand.

IV. Katie presented hers and realized that she left out a few simple steps. But overall showed several different tests of convergence and explained them well.

V. After presenting we read through several of the prompts. They all gave great advice. But we landed on:

I just take 3 days to prepare before the presentation in which I solve the problem and write my solution. Then practicing how I was going to present the topic and try to predict what the possible question I could be asked. I think I can improve by doing practice sessions with my groupmates before my usual HOT topic session.

We agreed that it hit all the things that we thought were important or helped us as well. Practice is the most obvious, but giving yourself time to practice is also key, so we like the three days. Also trying to predict the questions is a smart way of testing yourself and becoming more prepared.

Group 3 HOT topic practice- minutes

Group 3 Members: Shah, Ines, Pablo, Katie, Elijah (and Welmin as contributor)

Secretary: Katie

1. Presenter: Ines, Standard 7

Ines presented in a meeting with just Katie, who got the same advice from Prof. Poirier to do the conditional test first. Then we would know that it was absolute convergence right away! And we would save some time and work.

Feedback: Ines is really good with all the terms and math vocab. Well organized and clear!

2. Presenter: Pablo, Standard 4

Pablo presented with Ines and Katie. He worked out the problem on whiteboard. We got to see how his mind works!

Feedback: It was cool seeing the problem get worked out in real time. Pablo had nice tricks and reminders to help him in the process and save time in writing out the whole problem.

3. Presenter: Katie, Standard 7

Katie presented to Ines, Pablo and Welmin. Like Ines, had an absolute convergence so used an extra step but still got the same solution.

Feedback: Katie went through the problem really quickly, but still made it understandable. Katie was clear, and work was neat.

4. Presenter: Welmin, Standard 8

Welmin presented to Pablo and Katie. There was a mix up with the groups, but he still presented and did a great job. We did not get a screenshot.

Feedback: Welmin presented what he said was an easy problem, but it was his easy understanding and explanation that made it easy.

5. Discussion:

     A. What makes a good presentation?

  • Have every step written down.
  • Write neatly and clearly for everyone to understand (different colors help!) or whatever helps it to walk through/describe easier.

B. How can you prepare to give a good presentation?

  • Practice.
  • Know why you’re doing each step and how to describe it.
  • Have separate notes or prompts to help you remember the steps.
