Test #1 review: Functions – Translations: problem 4

Question: Give an equation for the result of shifting the graph of x^2 + y^2 = 49 up by 3 units, and right by 9 units.

When we input this in Desmos, the graph is a circle, which is why both the x and the y are on the same side and are squared.

The procedure is actually quite simple, we just add to x if we want to shift horizontally and to y if vertically to the number of units times negative 1, in which case:

  • To shift the graph 9 units to the right, we simply subtract 9 from x^2:

(x – 9)^2 + y^2 = 49

  • To shift the graph up, we do the same as we did with x just with 3

(x – 9)^2 + (y – 3)^2 = 49
