Amazon’s Affect on LIC

Introduction

The sources that we collected helped us during our performance. We went to Long Island City (LIC) to inform the community about Amazon’s arrival and if they wanted their voice to be heard, to reach out to the city. Amazon coming to LIC is breaking news. Before this news came out, rent was on the rise and with the announcement, it has sent rent sky high. Promises brought to the city, only to not be withheld once they were revealed. It is known that Amazon is getting intertwined with the government. Large companies are resulting into modern-day monopoly.

Amazon building a headquarters in LIC will increase its nearby trains’ daily riders. The trains around there are already “crowded and miserable” though, and Amazon’s arrival would only make the problem worse with its potential influx of 25,000 workers. Until the L train shutdown is complete, which will direct its 400,000 daily riders to use other trains like the 7 train, and the 7 train itself fixes their signal problems, Amazon employees will have to deal with crowded trains and will probably have to let a few trains go by before they can make it onto one. Amazon moving to LIC will result in gentrification because that’s what happens “when large companies with an upscale and specialized workforce move into an area.” Affordable housing plays a key concept in communities. It gives middle class people an option to secure houses at a low price. With Amazon moving into LIC, and the biggest housing projects right next door, Queensbridge, it’s going to shake up and raise up the prices of the rent around the neighborhood.
