Amazon – Before, After, and Reflection

Attempt 1

What we expected:

During our first performance we planned on speaking to a few locals to conduct interviews and discussion their concerns about Amazon moving into their neighborhood. We hoped that our signage and information to contact local representatives as well as 311 to voice their concerns.

What we did:

We met at Gantry Park to make the posters and planned on how we were going to get the locals or passerby to stop and speak with us on Sunday afternoon. We made posters with the #FuckofAmazon and the logo with the upside down smiley face.

How we felt it turned out:

We did not feel that were able to complete our original attempt to speak with the locals; however, we spoke to a shopkeeper who was hesitant about Amazon’s arrival. He own a small boutique shop that sold vintage items.

Attempt 2

What we expected:

From the first attempt we have learned to find a place where there is more foot traffic to attract more people to our cause and make a bigger scene. We were thinking about going to 34th Street Amazon book store or Penn Station.

What we did:

We ended up going to the Pier, but it was too wet. We set up shop across the street from Gantry Park under the scaffolding to keep the boxes dry. As we began building the boxes, we noticed people were stopping or asking us what we were doing. We were able to make more of attention and interaction from the locals.

How we felt it turned out:

We felt more accomplished about this attempt compared to the first attempt. We even got attention from locals who invited us to join their community meeting board even though we are not residence of LIC.
