Going to college can be very difficult. Alex always thought of online learning as easier when compared to in person in school until recently with the lock down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he realized how hard it is. For the regular classes it is not too bad but for laboratory classes it ended up becoming a lot more difficult especially when the class is about hands on electronic components, measuring and other stuff. During the fall 2020 semester Alex had his electronic class which gave him a lot of trouble because he just found taking lab classes distantly through zoom very challenging. He would have preferred to work with actual meters, oscilloscopes and circuit boards instead of the virtual version of them. His professor assigned working groups of four people each group to facilitate lab work and reports writing. Alex managed to cope with all the changes and was able to get a passing grade. He was so relieved that long and hard semester was finally over. the following semester while registering for classes for this spring 2021 semester he found out that he could not register for one of his next lab classes and when he checked for the reason why he saw that he had an F grade on his previous class and for some reason it was the class he had hard time with. He was troubled and couldn’t imagine retaking that class again. He decided to contact the professor after checking his grades online. He was registering for his classes a little bit late in did not want the classes to fill up, so he also contacted the department chairman and submitted a grade appeal form. The CET department contacted the professor and Luckily for Alex the professor agreed to let Alex pass the class because he did very well in the lecture section. Unfortunately, the process took sometimes so Alex could not register for some of his major classes and that kind of affected his financial aid. He later then needed an enrollment verification letter for tax purposes which he usually gets by filling out a form at school but just learned that he can do it online. After emailing the enrollment verification letter form, he did not get a response back after two weeks and decided to email the registrar’s office. He was then contacted just to be told that he had holds on his account and that he does not qualify to get an enrollment verification letter until those holds are cleared. Then, Alex learned that he had an outstanding balance of $3000 and quickly paid that using his credit card not that he can afford it, but just so he can proceed. Even after paying off the balance his request did not go through because he had to contact the bursar’s office to clear those holds. Mid-spring semester 2021 and John still has an F grade on his CET3510 class and had to email the CET Department again. This time he was told that the great appeal was approved on January 31st and emailed him a form that he had to forward to the registrar’s office for it to be processed. He was sure that the office was supposed to email him that form since January. The funny part is that he had to get back in contact with them to get that information, but Alex can keep his cool. Till now Alex still haven’t gotten his enrollment verification letter and his F grade is still up and he is unsure if it’s going to be cleared so he is able to register for his majors’ classes for next semester. The COVID-19 lockdown has made many activities very challenging and bad experience is the result.
