MEETING NOTES
- Questions/Challenges
- Janieca: heard from Pratt team yesterday
- did some user testing
- they shared mockups & mobile version
- they were very easy to work with
- Saria will meet with them tomorrow at 10am
- Janieca: heard from Pratt team yesterday
- Guest: Tanika Bashir
- Introductions
- Tanika: There is a networking mixer event happening this Thursday, could be very beneficial especially for Seniors — all are welcome! Come practice your elevator pitch.
- PDC needs communication about their platform (Handshake).
- NOTE: Most interns have heard of/are using Handshake!
- PDC Goal: bring more awareness to students – especially first year students, transfer students.
- Not just a job board, but a ton of information about targeted events.
- Need to find a way to create some ‘buzz’ around it!
- Want to make sure students know about it
- Handshake has been a great partner – adaptable/responsive to requests
- Would love to have a focus group, or continued conversation, with our interns about Handshake
- Would love to know: how are students using the site? Is your profile complete? Honest feedback about platform
- NACE – great resource, national organization
- Saria: was looking for internships using Handshake. Did apply to a lot of the jobs but didn’t hear back – but thinks she hasn’t created full profile, might be the reason why?
- Tanika: important to know the job search takes time/effort – “a job within a job”. PDC can help with step-by-step!
- Possible first project: How do I increase my presence on Handshake/complete my presence there, in order to get internship.
- The platform does provide prompts / progress bar for students building out their profile. Not just resume – also add relevant courses, work experience, goals. But can also share your resume (LinkedIn, etc)
- Want students to put effort into developing their profile, their brand. Complete profile = 85% more likely to hear from an employer.
- Takeaways:
- 1. The more complete your profile, the more likely you are to get response
- 2. Branding – having the same content/language on various places
- Include a Handshake link in your portfolio
- Jenna: Perhaps a Did Your Know? post on The Buzz could showcase some Handshake tutorials. And a What’s the Buzz post for the upcoming PDC Networking event.
- Interns could also work to produce images for slider/screens/etc
- What the best way to reach students? Do you read email?
- City Tech email (most popular response)
- On-Campus Screens
- Saw networking event on Handshake
- Anyone using Navigate? (text messages) –
- Janieca: hasn’t opted in to receive text messages
- Jody: Might be useful to do a focus group (could maybe bring in some other interns from other offices too)
- Getting the word out to students about making appointment with PDF to discuss career planning (they recommend 2 15-minute meetings per year (semester?)
- PDC summer bootcamp (last 2 summers). 3-4 sessions. Updating & enhancing your linkedin profile. Elevator pitch. Career exploration. Resources for students.
- Does PDC have resources we could take advantage of in building ePortfolio template.
- PDC recommends: resume + website +
- Handshake intro: citytech.joinhandshake.com
- Saria/Lyonel
- Most beginner-friendly themes?
- Front-end editor
- is this beginner friendly?
- Saria: Like 2024. You can edit it right there. Beginner friendly.
- Janieca/Corey
- Review of DYK posts, feedback & suggestions
- Preview allows you to see featured image
- Shabaj/Darren
- Goal: 1 template, limited # pages, starter content’
- Following discussion with Tanika:
- Shabaj: for template – could add widget on side to provide LinkedIn and Handshake widget
- Shabaj: what about “Elevator pitch” vs “About me”
- Jenna: consolidate some of the pages: maybe just 3 pages, about me, resume, and projects
- how much sample content to include in pages?
- No posts (so no “recent posts” or categories, etc)
- Do Saria/Lyonel have recommendation for beginner-friendly theme?
- Try out 2024 theme.
- Shabaj: Education Pro theme is also beginner-friendly
- What about a 1-page site? Discussion: might actually be complicated to use/implement, endless scrolling etc
- Can we add a meeting Wed May 1st 3-4? Saria yes. Janieca has class, free later (but can do a separate checkin). Shabaj yes. Darren yes. Corey has class later in the day but can make 3-4 work.
