Spring 2023 CUNY Open-Source Tools for Teaching Summit
Thursday, March 2, 2023, 10am-12pm on Zoom
The Baruch College Center for Teaching and Learning invites specialists in educational technology at CUNY who are committed to developing free and openly licensed materials to join us on Zoom for an inaugural CUNY Open-Source Tools for Teaching Summit. In light of a growing interest in teaching with open-source tools nationwide and attention to Open Educational Resource (OER) initiative work at CUNY—including Baruch’s TeachOER platform, a finalist for the 2022 Open Education Global Award for Excellence—we began construction in 2022 of a homegrown “Open-Source Tools for Teaching” platform, in conjunction with CUNY-wide workshops for faculty, to facilitate practice with open-source platforms like Omeka or TimelineJS. With this 2023 Summit meeting, we invite learning experience stakeholders across CUNY to share and explore approaches to teaching with open-source technology and hope the event can be a launch point for future cross-campus collaborations.
This Summit event is designed as a symposium-style conversation among program administrators and staff with specialized interests in open-source teaching, including but not limited to representatives from CUNY’s teaching and learning centers, and will assume familiarity with open-source technology. It is not a workshop to learn these tools, but a working session to cultivate an environment that supports and fosters their use.
