08 Discussion

Each week you will need to respond to two questions posted. Your response should be a minimum of 150 words for both questions. You should also include at least one response to your fellow students. The responses are a requirement for participation part of your grade.

Question 01 –

Why do you think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons? If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, how do you think it would impact the overall design?

Question 02 –

When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.

I think low poly portraits should only be made up of triangles and no other polygons because other polygons could potentially make it look not low poly and change aesthetic.

Having multiple fills in a particular shape would be useful when making an object that would need to appear 3d, like a lamp or pot or a plant.

The low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles because they are simple shapes which are the most fundamental. They are also a computationally efficient way to represent surfaces in 3d spaces. This makes them ideal for rendering in games and other applications.

Complex shapes can be broken down into triangles allowing for the creation of intricate models with a relatively low polygon count.

If four sided shapes were used it would have a more blocky and less organic look and feel.

It would be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape when creating complex designs, gradients, and subtle shading effects. Especially for objects like fruit where the natural variations in color and texture are desired.

In complex designs, multiple fills allow you to create intricate patterns or layered effects within a single shape , saving time and effort compared to drawing separate elements.

With gradients you can use the multiple fills with different colors and opacities to create smooth transitions and gradients within a shape.

And by adding fills with slightly different colors and transparency you can create subtle shading and depth making objects appear more 3 dimensional.

When you said,” It would be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape when creating complex designs, gradients, and subtle shading effects. Especially for objects like fruit where the natural variations in color and texture are desired.” I agree.

    Question 01

A low-poly portrait is typically made up of triangles because triangles are the simplest polygon that can define a flat surface in 3D modeling and digital design. Unlike other polygons, triangles are always planar, meaning they won’t warp or distort in ways that could break the geometric integrity of the design. If the portrait were made up of four-sided shapes (quadrilaterals), it could result in an uneven, distorted look because quads are not always guaranteed to be planar—they can become non-coplanar, leading to rendering issues. Additionally, using triangles allows for more precise control over shading and detail, which is important for capturing the structure of a face in a visually appealing way.

    Question 02

Adding multiple fills to a shape is useful when creating complex visual effects such as textures, depth, or lighting variations. For example, in clothing design, multiple fills can be used to simulate fabric patterns, highlights, and shadows. A denim jacket in Illustrator might have a base blue fill, a secondary fill for fabric texture, and an additional gradient fill to mimic lighting or folds in the material. This layering of fills enhances realism and depth, making the design more dynamic and visually interesting.

Triangles do not equal number of sides, there are two lines that are diagonal and one line that is straight. Which makes the design more interesting to the viewer because there is contrast unlike a square that has all equal sides. Another reason is that when color is added to the triangle with no stroke it makes the design feel smooth. Which allows a geometric look to the design, and makes it feel very three dimensional. Now when it comes to adding multiple color fills to the design, it would be especially useful if you want to save time and make a unity in a design. Meaning you want a certain area to be a certain color to show theme or contrast between other colors in the design.

Q1. Triangles work better for low poly portraits because their sharp angles and edges naturally draw the viewer’s eye, creating a sense of movement and direction. The pointed shape of triangles helps guide the viewer’s gaze along the face’s structure, making the portrait look more dynamic and interesting. For example, using triangles to define the jawline or nose can make the face appear more detailed and lifelike. On the other hand, four-sided shapes, like squares and rectangles, are more balanced and symmetrical, which makes them feel stable but also a bit boring. They don’t have the same natural flow or sharpness as triangles, so a portrait made of squares might look flat and less exciting. Triangles add energy and sharpness to the design, making the portrait look more modern and eye-catching.

Q2. Adding multiple fills to shapes is useful when you want to create more depth, texture, and detail, but don’t want to complicate the design with additional shapes or layers. By applying multiple fills, you can combine different colors, gradients, and patterns within a single shape for more creative control and flexibility. An example of an object that would benefit from multiple fills is a sunset. You could use a gradient fill to blend warm colors like orange, pink, and purple, creating a smooth transition that mimics the natural color shift of a sunset.

I completely agree with your point about triangles being more effective for low-poly portraits. Their sharp angles naturally create a sense of movement, making the composition more visually engaging. The way triangles can define facial features, like the jawline or nose, adds a level of depth that squares or rectangles might not achieve as effectively. The dynamic nature of triangles definitely contributes to a more modern and striking aesthetic. I also like your example of using multiple fills for a sunset. Gradients are a great way to create a natural transition of colors, adding depth without cluttering the design with extra layers. This technique can be especially useful in digital illustration to create rich, textured visuals while keeping the composition simple. Have you experimented with multiple fills in any of your own projects?

      • Lance

this was very helpful and very well, and you explained it

    • Habib Bodunrin

I also think that triangle have a hierarchy in term of lines where there are two diagonals and one straight line, which helps balance out stability and dynamism in a design.

    Question 01 –

Low poly portraits should be made up of triangles because they provide a stable and defined structure. Triangles are the simplest polygon, and they always remain flat, which helps maintain a clean, faceted look in the design. If the portrait were made with four-sided shapes, it could lead to distortion or an uneven surface, especially when shading or transforming the design. Quads can also might not stay perfectly flat, which could disrupt the low-poly aesthetic and make the portrait look less precise. Even distorted.

    Question 02 –

Adding multiple fills to a shape is useful when creating more depth, texture, or layered effects in a design. For example, when designing a leaf in Illustrator, multiple fills could enhance realism. A base fill could provide the main color, an additional fill could add detailed veins, and a gradient or texture fill could create shading and highlights. This technique helps bring the object to life and makes it more visually engaging rather than flat or overly simplistic.

    • Hao Wei Wu

      Hi Auribel,

I agree with you that triangles are the best choice for low poly portraits because they provide a stable and defined structure. Triangles are the simplest polygon and always remain flat, which helps maintain a clean, faceted look in the design. If the portrait were made with four-sided shapes, it could lead to distortion or an uneven surface, especially when shading or transforming the design.
