Overview:
To draw negative shapes between still life objects to improve design and observation skills
Due Date: XXXX
Instructions:
- Set up a still life of between 5-10 adjacent and overlapping objects.
- Make at least three blind contour drawings. Draw SLOWLY! Spend at least 5 minutes on each drawing.
- On 14×17 inch white paper, and using either a soft (4B or 6B) graphite pencil or black paint, make a drawing of the negative shapes between objects. The negative shapes will be black.
- Make a few drawings until you are satisfied with the overall design in terms of positive/negative shapes, size variety and rhythm.
- Create positive/negative shape ambiguity.
- Upload your favorite blind contour and favorite positive/negative shape drawing to the Positive/Negative Shapes category housed under Student Post of OpenLab.
Learning Objectives:
- To develop awareness of positive/negative shape relationships for 2-dimensional design, illusion of 3-dimensional space, and observational drawing.
- To become more comfortable with trusting visual perception (as against mental preconceptions)
- To increase creativity and willingness to experiment
