Overview:

Exploration of different types of lines and the six methods to create an illusion of depth

Due date: xxxx

Instructions:

  1. You will be making a drawing based on the Exquisite Corps technique, though you will see your partner’s drawing throughout the process.
  2. Choose a partner and discuss how and when you will share each others drawings.
  3. On 8 1/2 x 11 inch printing paper, make a design that explores spatial illusion and line quality.
  4. Use all six methods of depth illusion at least once.
  5. Use at least five different types of lines.
  6. Be sure at least two shapes touch at least one edge of the paper.
  7. Share your drawing with your partner either through OpenLab, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.
  8. Either using digital drawing tools or on a second piece of printing paper, continue your partner’s drawing. Add your new drawing to one of the sides where elements touched the edge of your partner’s drawing.
  9. Take a photo of both drawings together and upload these photos to the Line Quality and Spatial Illusion category housed under Student Posts on OpenLab.

The Exquisite Corpse was invented in 1925 in Paris by the surrealists Yves TanguyJacques Prévert,André Breton and Marcel Duchamp. The name ‘cadavre exquis’ was derived from a phrase that resulted when they first played the game, ‘le cadavre exquis boira le vin nouveau’ (‘the exquisite corpse will drink the new wine’).

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will become familiar with the many expressive qualities of lines.
  • Students will understand how to create depth illusion through using the six methods of depth illusion.
  • Students will explore how to create design with three-dimensional objects.
  • Students will gain experience of working collaboratively.
