Overview:
To make an accurate and well-designed drawing of an actual real and complex space entails bringing together many skills. As the artist has only one set of eyes, there must be only one horizon line. The placement of this horizon line depends on design, artist’s viewpoint and artistic intent. There may be many vanishing points, but all these points must relate to each other. Proportion, foreshortening, positive/negative shape relationships must be considered, as well as focus, page placement, scale, unity and variety, line quality and line weight.
Making many thumbnail sketches to discover the best design, placement of major components and angles for important vanishing point guidelines is critical. Making on-site sketches from numerous locations helps conceptualize the 3-dimensionality of the space, making it much easier to organize the final drawing’s internal structure.
