Overview:

Positive/negative shapes, sometimes called figure/ground, refers to the relationship between the focus of the image (i.e. the positive shape or figure) and the spaces in between. Both types of shapes are equally important in art, as the negative shapes help define the positive. Negative shapes are the glue that holds an image together. They clarify spatial and location relationships, help define the artistic intent, and are intrinsic to overall design.
