The photograph “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade” by Matthew Pillsbury is about the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. On the two side of this photo, there are some of tall buildings, the giant balloons floats above the street. On the bottom of photo, tens of thousands crowd the street. I think the purpose of the image is to show the bustling scene of the parade. The photographer blurs the people and street; it makes me feel the street is very crowded and busy. Also, the balloon is blurred, it feels like the balloons drift quickly, suddenly fly out of sight.
The photographer has used the rule of thirds and leading lines composition principle. The rule of thirds is used two equally horizontal line and vertical line to divide a photo into nine equal parts. In this photo, a clear balloon is placed at the intersection of the vertical line and horizontal line, where in the upper left of the photo. The trend of street forming the leading lines that leads the eye into the photograph. In addition, the photographer has blurred the crowd and street, in contrast to the clear buildings, which giving a strong visual impact.
