CBC News. “Schools Consider Cellphone Ban to Address Classroom Disruptions, Violence.” YouTube, 13 June 2023, www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItZVPUK9TNI.
Part 2: Summary
A news reporter on CBC News reports that many schools across the country are considering banning cellphone use due to disruption and violence. Later in the video, Deanna Sumanak Johnson, a senior educational reporter, is introduced by the news report. Johnson discusses the rising rates of classroom disruptions and violence in schools that are in Canada and the United States. Many experts and educators believe that cellphone use should be prohibited globally. Professor Sachin Maharaja, who teaches at the University of Ottawa’s program in educational leadership, gets interviewed by Johnson. He explains his reasons for suggesting that cellphones should be banned. He claimed that because students are not paying attention for a long period of time and are not interacting with those around them, it will be more difficult for them to develop a sense of belonging and personal wellbeing. Tony Jokic, a father, was also interviewed by Johnson. When she was a new student, his middle school-aged daughter was being tormented. He claimed that their phone was the only thing that gave them a sense of security. Also, he claimed that having access to her phone was like having a lifeline because it allowed her to message him or her mother whenever she felt unsafe.
Part 3: Reflection
According to Tony Jokic “There was very little that they can do to protect her and having access to her cellphone was sort of lifeline because she was able to message myself or mom and we could then attend the school and extract her from situations where she felt unsafe”
I agree with Jokic that a cellphone can be a lifesaver because, when I was in middle school there was someone who entered my school building with a weapon. I was so scared, but my first instinct was to hide and text my parents about the situation. They would tell me to remain calm and follow the lockdown protocols. I still remember the classroom I was in; it was the science room, it was dark and silent until we heard cops coming in. Though unfortunately the person was able to escape but I didn’t want to go home on my own because God forbid i run into the person as I’m walking home. My parents picked me up and talked to me about how important it is to stay calm and to always update them whether I’m at school or outside of school.
Part 4- Rhetorical Analysis
The CBC News report intended audience was for parents and educators. The purpose for this report is to inform people of the pros and cons of cellphone use. The event that is happening that is the cause for this report is because many teachers have been reporting issues with cellphone use in the classrooms but on the other hand parents feel like by their children having a phone makes them feel protected. The source that I am using is CBC News and it’s a reliable source. It is important for the information to be current because if it wasn’t we wouldn’t know if it’s still relevant or if people’s opinion changed over time.
Part 5- Notable Quotables
“With the rising rates of school violence seen across Canada in the United States with disturbance to class time to learning more and more educators and experts feel that maybe banning cell phones across the country universally is the right thing to do”
“It was important that cellphone be banned it also undermines their ability to listen to others attentively and with empathy”
“-Teacher who said you know they have a little bucket where you place your cellphone at the beginning of class and then some students just don’t want to put their phone in a bucket or at the end of class whe theyre picking up their own they can see what’s popping up on a screen of another student and can taunt that student or tease them about it”
“There was very little that they can do to protect her and having access to her cellphone was sort of lifeline because she was able to message myself or mom and we could then attend the school and extract her from situations where she felt unsafe”
Hi Vanessa, great job on your source entry! Your summary was clear and balanced, and I liked how you connected a statement from the video to a quote. Your reflection showed a genuine interest in the topic. For the rhetorical analysis, it would have been helpful to discuss why CBC News is reliable and its methods for helping Americans.
I think your source entry is very well written. I also related to you reflection but feel you could add some more information.
YOur summary does not give me a good idea of your source. — Listen watch again and revise!
What is the genre?
Reflection: Your connection is to a point that supports cellphones should be allowed in schools. Doesn’t this viewpoint opposes the MI of your source? You should comment on this opposing viewpoint if you want to keep this — OR — CHANGE it up. Remember that you should respond directly to one of the MIs of the source (again what is the genre?)
