It’s time to JAM!

In addition to being National Poetry Month, April is also Jazz Appreciation Month!
Photos of Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, Stan Kenton, Bessie Smith, Teddy Wilson
Celebrate by listening to Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, Stan Kenton, Teddy Wilson, Bessie Smith, and many other jazz and blues greats on Naxos Music Library. (Just remember to log out when you’ve reached your maximum capacity of jazz for the day! Our license only allows 3 simultaneous users so logging out ensures others have access to the database, too.)
If you’re more interested in learning about jazz and its history, consider checking out Oxford Music Online. This database lets you access and cross-search multiple music reference resources at once. Advanced search options provide powerful tools for content navigation, including biography searching, bibliography searching, and the ability to easily search within longer, multi-section articles.
Prefer to experience jazz history in person? Considering visiting the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and the Louis Armstrong House Museum, both right here in New York City.

Naxos Music Library is live!

As of January 2012, we have full access to Naxos Music Library. Our license only accommodates a maximum of 3 simultaneous users so please remember to log out when you’re finished using it!
Naxos Music LibraryNaxos Music Library provides streaming (non-downloadable) access to classical, jazz, world, folk, and Chinese music. The advanced search engine enables searching by genre, composer, lyricist, artists/performing groups, instruments, periods, countries, years of composition, and moods. Instructors may create playlists to supplement music courses with listening material.
It is accessible from the library’s list of databases but this is the direct link:

(As usual, you will need to log in with your City Tech barcode if you’re not on campus. If you’re not familiar with accessing databases from off campus, please see the Off-Campus Access instructions.)
Remember to log out at the end of your session to ensure that others will have access to the resource.
Faculty members who wish to create playlists for instructional use, please contact Prof. Allie Verbovetskaya at averbovetskaya@citytech.cuny.edu.

Naxos Music Library

We have excellent non-print resources featuring still images and videos but no music collections. However, we are currently considering Naxos Music Library for the library. It is on trial until December 31, 2011.
Naxos provides streaming music (music can not be downloaded). It chiefly consists of classical music but there is considerable supplemental material to aid in learning about music including analyses of specific works by many composers. Classroom faculty can create custom playlists.
City Tech Faculty: Contact Monica Berger mberger@citytech.cuny.edu for access to the playlist function.
