Celebrate Black History Month with these databases!

February marks Black History Month in the United States. Originally founded as Negro History Week in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson, Congress established February as Black History Month in 1986.

The following databases will help you locate articles, media, and primary sources related to African-American history:

Black Thought & Culture

Primary sources covering the non-fiction published works of leading African Americans. Also includes interviews, journal articles, speeches, essays, pamphlets, letters and other fugitive material.

Oxford African American Studies Center

Reference materials on the African American experience as well as primary source documents, images, maps and other graphic materials. Limited to one user–please remember to logout.

Black Drama

Contains the full text of over a thousand plays written from the mid-1800s to the present by playwrights from North America, English-speaking Africa, the Caribbean, and other African diaspora countries.

Other databases that will have information on the history of blacks in America include American History in Video, Ethnic NewsWatch, Humanities Full Text, JSTOR, and Project MUSE.

Cambridge Histories and Caribbean Lit

Starting off 2010 with a bang, we have two new resources: Cambridge Histories Online and Alexander Street’s Caribbean Literature.  Off-campus access is now available.
Cambridge Histories Online consists of Cambridge University Press’s reference titles in history. The collection is both browseable and searchable.
Caribbean Literature (Alexander Street) is primary text material and covers the 19th and 20th centuries. Users can explore this by specific Caribbean island or region.

New content on Oxford African American Studies Center

An additional 600 biographies from the African American National Biography have been added as well as 400 articles from the Oxford Companion to Black British History, the first-ever reference work to explore the story of Britain’s black population over the span of nearly 2,000 years. 30 multimedia clips are new, including Colin Powell speaking on changes in the military, historical footage of civil rights protests in Birmingham, Alabama, a United Negro College Fund TV Ad, and more.
