Last Spring, the Library piloted an OER Initiative in response to growing concerns over textbook costs.
Open educational resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials shared under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by others. Faculty who participate in the OER fellowship will select from open course content and library resources to curate an individualized course resource to replace the conventional textbook as the only required material in a Fall 2016 course. The objective of the initiative is to provide students with free access to course materials and continue propagating student and faculty engagement through dynamic pedagogy. The initiative encourages adoption of the OER in additional course sections in subsequent semesters. OER fellows will attend workshops during the spring 2016 semester, complete the OER in June, implement, and promote the OER in Fall 2016, and submit a brief written assessment the following January.
Our first cohort of OER Fellows are currently using the OER in their courses, and have saved students close to $11,000 so far. We are expanding upon the success of the initial pilot and increasing our cohort from 3 to 10 Fellows, and very much look forward to a dynamic group of City Tech faculty to join the Fellowship program next spring!
