Banned Books Week

Banned Books week enters it’s 30th anniversary this week. Books have been banned in communities and schools around the country for a variety of reasons. Mark Twain’s Huckelberry Finn has been banned for racism, and J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books have been banned because of witchcraft and “encouraging children to lie.” ALA’s Banned Books Week program has documented these novels, and over 1,000 other banned and challenged books, over the years. Banned Books Week helps promote our collective freedom of expression, and most importantly, the freedom to choose what we want to read.

Did you know that you can schedule research appointments with City Tech librarians?
We are available at the reference desk for short consultations, but for more in-depth help, you can also schedule time to meet with a librarian who specializes in your area to discuss your work. We don’t just cover library resources, either. Ask us how to use the open web and freely available information to enhance your research. Get a head start on your papers by visiting early in the semester, a well thought-out research plan can save you time and frustration.
If you’d like to schedule an appointment or wish to email us about library research questions, please visit the Ask a Librarian page the library website.

Off-campus access unavailable on 7/24/12 8-10 AM

On Tuesday, July 24, 2012 (that’s tomorrow!), members of the City Tech community will be unable to access all library databases from off-campus between the hours of 8 and 10 AM while CIS upgrades the centrally hosted EZproxy server. As a result, EZproxy services will be unavailable while this maintenance is being performed. All services are expected to be restored at 10 AM. Please report any remaining outages or complications to Prof. Allie Verbovetskaya at averbovetskaya@citytech.cuny.edu or 718-260-5457.
Access to the library databases will remain available while on-campus, though, so you can still conduct your research while in the library, in one of the learning centers, or anywhere else at City Tech during those two hours!
