summer-reading for blog
Whether this summer finds you at the beach, laying by the pool, or just on a long commute to school or work, there’s no better way to escape summer in the city than by diving into a good book. The City Tech library has a large selection of novels, biographies, and graphic novels. You don’t have to leave New York to find yourself On the Road with Sal Paradise or in California at the end of the psychedelic sixties. Find these books and more recommended beach reads on the display near the entrance of the library.
We also have some great streaming films that you can watch from home.

This award-winning documentary tells the poignant, stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, history-making journeys from the late 30s to the present day. This film captures public performances and painful personal revelations related to the pioneering gender outlaw.
How did a country that until 2010 had no organ donation system, become one of the world’s organ transplant leaders? For years, China claimed that the organs came from executed prisoners, but the numbers didn’t add up. Short wait times and a endless supply of donors, made China a popular destination for transplant surgeries.

How the NAACP Battled Public Library Segregation

Before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, public libraries were a battleground in the fight against Jim Crow.
This article is a fascinating read on how in 1945, the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) successfully sued the Navasink (N.J.) Public Library to end its discriminatory practices. The library limited African American patrons to use of the library for six hours a week, only on Wednesdays, and access to a separate room in the back of the building.
